Just reading Wikipedia and stumbled across this.

I'm sure we all remember the famed Merc A class failing this test. Well it seems the mag publishes stats for all the cars it tests.

Oddly though, it seems a Citroen Xantia is the car to beat.

It's not the use of hydropneumatic suspension as such. It's the fact that - unlike the rest of the range - it's actively controlled on Activa so it can work the four tyres far more evenly.

Absolutely fk all. Your engine choice is quite good should you wish to sack off the 2.0 turbo. The lump from the GTI-6 will bolt straight in and can be supercharged to a reliable 400bhp, though just under 300 is probably the smart idea.

There is one Lotus Exige owner out there who will never own up to a Xantia Activa being glued to his tailpipes, especially when he found out that it was 'just' a Xantia. If you ever get a chance to try one out that is actually 100% working in the anti-roll department, you will be amazed. My ST220 would struggle to keep with one through the corners despite having a lot more power and similar weight. Extremely under-rated and talented, needs a bigger turbo and more boost though as the low-blow set up is not for outright speed, just smooth and torquey, very much like a TD.

Shame it was hobbled with a 150bhp engine so it was never quick enough.

er, it's a "lets just make up a complete load of random numbers" test then.... A Kia C'eed is the same as the Exige???

And as for the Activa, "active" suspension isn't actually any "better" than non active suspension. The cars lateral weight transfer (and hence ability to keep all 4 tyres evenly loaded on the slip vs lateral g curve) is set purely by it's track, mass, and C of G height (for static case) So no matter how "stiff" the suspension on an Activa is, it's not much help really, when compared to the Exige???

If the test is effectively a "slalom" test, and the "passing" criteria is max speed without spinning, then cars with stability control (and the massive yaw authority that gives) will easily "outperform" even a pretty sporting car without. That may explain some of the results??
