Suzuki Cappuccino.....loads of low speed fun. I once got ours sideways on a wet approach to a roundabout at a dual carriageway, and still remained in my own lane. Much to my own relief, and the bloke minding his own business in the adjacent lane.

106 Rallye 1.3 edition.

No weight over the front axel and unassisted steering. Brilliant. I'd love to compare it with a 205 Rallye as I've not driven one, however I can't think of any front drive car that comes close for pure joyful handling.

The real key to it was that it managed to be perfectly weighted like a 306 GTI, had turn in like a 205, resisted heading into oversteer too painfully like a Puma and communicated like a go kart

It's a very young thread so I'm only slightly surprised this isnt here yet

More fun than a thing for having fun with

Lightweight and so responsive

She has pleased many a loan driver at Marham, I always allow her to experience other drivers

Slow-ish but 113 is quick enough to lose a license with, home or away

I think some posters need to drive some kit cars.

Ultima gtr would be fun and terrifying in equal measures smile

-Hillman Imp
^^^^^^

Good Call!

Some years ago....My car had broken down and I had to leave it at a garage miles from where I lived. Anyhooo....I had to get home and the guy couldn't give me a lift or anything, so I asked if he had anything I could borrow to get me home and I would bring it back next day or when my car was fixed. His reply was rather blunt and to the point but he said I have this Hillman Imp you can buy from me for £40....I said....Mmmmmm (scratching my chin).....it's taxed and MOT'd, he says....I said Sold!

The most fun I have ever had in a car! (Ahem! Driving that is). Best £40 I ever spent. Lasted the whole winter, nippy as hell, amazing in snow, better than any other car I've owned (well more fun anyhooo). The gear stick finally broke off, so I left it on a side street about six months later.

I'm surprised that these haven't been mentioned yet - I'm biased though as I have a Sport.

A great deal of the fun of ownership for me is in modifying, and these have plenty of scope, depending on the depth of your wallet.

Also, for your budget you should might be able to get a Zetec engined Elan, if you can find an owner willing to part with one.

The Caterham is a lot of fun to drive, and in a completely different way, so is the Mustang. One is razor sharp, almost instinctive, the other is entertainingly wallowy and a great event to drive.

i had a 968cs earlier in teh year

great car for all sorts of reasons but for pure fun not a patch on a featherweight caterham or elise

a catreham is like a glove ... no inertia, no bulk, no delay between input and output, there is very little that gets close IME

Depends what sort of driving you do most of. I use this to potter around town and for trips to the dump and it's brilliant:-

Costs peanuts to run and the grin factor is huge!
couldn't agree more. I have as much driving my Defender as I do my Caterham. Depends on what you mean by fun, believe me this this was fun! ;-)

Some interesting replies...

I have had several TVR's including a Griff 500 and whilst its a great car its not fun on the road as it requires huge restraint not to exceed the speed limit by 2 or 3x

Driven plenty of Land Rovers and whilst they are a good tool for a job they aren't fun to drive.

I should have included most kitcars but I was really thinking about standard production cars.

I had a Mk1 MR2 (a supercharged one) and didn't like it either.

Its noticeable how few have suggested modern cars, so it isn't just me who thinks they've lost their way.

Many/most modern cars isolate the drivers so much from the road that it takes away the fun for me. Plus, as you say, some are so competent that for them to be fun requires licence-losing actions.

I had great fun in this stripped out E30. I covered it with homemade Spongebob graphics, stuck some poly windows it it and I had a laugh as did anyone who saw it. Went like stink too!

50th anniversary V8. Auto box. Stffened anti roll bar bushes. Great fun pushing it in to the twisties. Nimble in traffic. Just was a great vehicle to own.
