In Guernsey you can ride a 50cc at 14! When I taught at one of the local high schools they had parking for 100 mopeds, scooters, bikes, etc. Though most weeks there was at least one kid in plaster or off school because they gad fallen off. It worked there and the kids loved the freedom and most parents enjoyed stopping being a taxi service.

I remember seeing a nipper being pulled over driving one of these on one of the policey programmes:

except I think it was a hardtop? Somehow it didn't look quite so Fisher-Price on the telly!

Google 50cc cars, there may be something less likely to get him beaten up more palatable for a 16 y.o!

They'll even let kids drive a Bentley.
Don't let BG junior read that; BG'll have a heart attack! hehe
He spent all weekend driving BG around the Silverstone circuit complex in August at the BDC race meet. I'm sure it's against the rules, as well as insurance issues too, not least the lack of any. But lots of kids drive their folks cars at this meet, especially on the old runway in the middle of the circuit. 13 year old girls in Vintage 3 litres and the like. It's the really little 'uns on quads that worry me, not older kids driving Bentleys.

BG junior is coming up to 16, he's not sure whether he wants a ped or not, he doesn't think they're cool, mainly because of all the tards screaming around making too much noise. I suggested a proper Piaggio/Vespa scooter, they're cool surely? but he reckons not, he will wait for a car at 17.

I suggested one of these, and got a very definite NO WAY!

Why the hell not? I would have had one at 16, a great canvas for some cool paint/graffiti/graphics too. It seats 2, and you're in a cabin out of the elements.

Oh well, sod him! hehe
Interesting. And no doubt the same instability issues the Reliant 3-wheelers have. At 16 I - and several of my schoolfriends of the same age had Reliants - and a few of us tried upside down travel. I don't recommend it!

Right, questions.
1 Would you not hit your head on the shelf every time you turned over?
2 Would it not be very uncomfortable lying on that hard surface?
3 And last but not least, would it not be un secure and cold in this weather to have that huge hole in the side of the vehicle?

Are you serious?

You want to send your son out in the modern motorised equivalent of Granville's bike?

16 eh?

How about this:

Though he'd have to take the Queen's penny, and promise to do as he's told for a few years.

To the OP - Is there any virtue in him having a moped or something like that trike thing in the Original post?

I was the same (many moons ago) - Whilst all my mates wasted money on 50cc mopeds with little more go than I could produce on my bicycle and enjoyed the experiences of repeated engine rebuilds and falling off (with various degrees of injury) I just waited a year, keeping fit on my bike (oh those were the days!) and learnt to drive a car.

I'm not suggesting that liking bikes is in anyway wrong or a problem, but if your son would rather just wait a year and get a car (presumably saving along the way) is that a problem?

M

PS If he buys a pink moped he'll become something of a minor local celebrity - Well, worked for my daughter! smile

I would accept that your son appears to have a brain and is wise to pass up on the scooter with the view of getting a car at 17.

I recall a few friends of mine getting scooters when we went to 6th form and some paid the best part of £3k for a scooter an £1k to insure it which is madness. The biggest problems with scooters is you travel alone which isn't cool, you are exposed to the weather conditions and 90% of the scooter riders I see I would class as chavs (a word id rarely use but is appropriate on this occasion) which I wouldn't want my son being associated with.

Wise words Dave yes

I would have had summat like it in a shot, but, he ain't me.

I'll stitch him, I'll get him a 2CV when he's 17 hehe
I paid £900 for my first scooter a one year old NRG with 4,000 miles I ran it for one year and 3,000 miles I then sold it for £800 so lost £100 in a year. Insurance cost me £400 fire and theft in an average area aged 16. Got me to work without ever going wrong which would have take like 3 bus's it started first time every time and cost me aboout £5 to do nearly 100 miles at the time. Made a few friends and used to be sometimes over 15 of us out at one time also went to various bike meets on it depsite being a scooter. De-restricted they will do 50mph with ease use naff all petrol and more importantly give you a great sense of the road and safety etc... before you get in a car. I am in no doubt I am a far better driver with the experience of having a scooter than i would have been without having one and pay a lot of respect to bikers as i now know what its like when idiots are not paying attention and pull out on you etc...
Big no no's of them are never ever buy new you loose half the value i.e. £1000 within a year so just completly pointless. And also dont go out without proper gear the amount of scooter riders I saw with just traccies on and a cheap mac amazed me. People dont seem to realise that with a bit of tweaking (which most have) they easilly exceed 50mph and if you crash at that speed without any gear you are going to be a mess.

When I was sixteen I looked at all these options as special needs vehicles hehe I very happily waited a year, didn't waste the money, then bought a proper car. Albeit a cheap one. Again I didn't waste money tuning it or any other nonsense. A year later again at 18 I had a brand new car with the deposit and month payments met 100% by yours truly. At the time I felt very proud and was so happy I waited!

So, what did BG Jr do in the end? Fer Jr is in the same situation, and I was looking at a QPod, but cannot find anyone to insure it.
