PH Drift School: It's Back

Come drift with us at Silverstone to learn the art of going sideways in a Caterham

Good news for fans of gratuitous oversteer: another famed PH drift day, held with the good chaps at Caterham cars, approaches. This time the date is this Sunday and the place is Silverstone, so why not pop along for some smoky, cone-based slidy fun?

Oversteering, drifting, skidding, going sideways....call it what you will, but however you describe it nobody can deny that it's great fun, and doing it with other PHers in specially set up Caterhams only adds to the giggle.

During the day we'll teach you how to get the car sideways, adding in various elements along the way to increase your skills. At the end of the day we'll have you at a level where you can tell a crab a thing or two about going sideways, as you 'hang it out' around our custom-built course (using cones - doesn't matter if you get it wrong then).

Have a read of the original article we ran for the first session to get a few more details - or find out just how badly Riggers did when he had a go back in October - then call the Caterham team on 01883 333700 to book, or there's Online booking available here.

One more thing to mention - Caterham has dropped the price by £30 to £195 per person - so get booking!

We look forward to seeing you there!

Anybody know roughly how long you get in the driving seat on one of these things? Always fancied this.

So nearly £200 for 12 minutes of driving?

No thanks

I did the similiar Westfield day which you also got around 10-15 minutes in the car and standing around in the rain and wind for 7 hours.

It was enjoyable, but certainly not £200 enjoyable.

I keep getting asked what I want for Xmas and a driving day where you learn about tail out antics like this would be perfect... Have you got any suggestions for better alternatives?

Your nearest deserted roundabout?

That's how I learnt my craft. No kids or Polar bears died in the process either.

How about just leasing a Westie or Caterham for the day? Can't be that much more can it?

Oulton Park do Drift Days from time to time, went to one on November 6th with the GT4OC.

28 cars were there I think, spread across two "stages" of low-friction track.

Laps are only about 30-50 seconds long but you can have as many goes as you want, you just queue up and go when you're ready and the track is clear. 2-3 cars on track at once.

Cost is usually around £150 I think.

It would have been well worth it, but I'd buggered my neck up a few days previous. It had healed a bit by the Saturday of the event but 3 laps and some sideways movement and I'd done it in again, so I had to abort for the rest of the day.

Good fun though.

It is fun. But you have to provide your own car.

Until you factor in the set of tyres you just burned through in 12mins!

Santa Pod have a "Drift What Ya Brung" - not as bad as it sounds, session on certain Wednesday's and Saturdays with beginners, intermediate and advanced areas. Best of all there a friendly bunch and the chaps that run it will jump in with you and give you some tuition. There is also lots of part worn tyres available for free (or used to be) and a mobile tyre fitter (£5 per tyre change). The cost for the day (tyre changes excluded) was around £65 again you take your own car.

Yes, I'd say so.

What you lose in terms of driving time, you gain in using someone else's tyres, having a series of good courses set up for you by someone who knows what they're up to, being given good advice that is specific to you and from someone who knows how to do it well, and doing it all in the context of a good day out.

It's also nice to know that your drift will not be spoiled by the sudden appearance of a blue light, Nissan Micra, or kid in a pushchair.

And I'd say I got a lot more than 12 minutes.

(But hey - I drive a 911. What do I know about value for money? wink )
