It's not got a MINI engine either!
And I would not bank on it not doing well either.

I heard a stat years ago about the 959, if you shot past a 959 at 100mph it could overtake you within 1/4 of a mile. Not sure if that is true but in the mid 80's, that was a neat trick to pull off!
Lets say you were travelling at a constant 100mph over the start line and kept at a constant 100mph over the whole 1/4 mile, it would take you about 9 seconds to cover that distance. So the Porsche 959 would need to cover the 1/4 mile in under 9 seconds from a standing start to catch and overtake you. Since the Porsche 959 does a quarter mile in just under 12 seconds, it would be very far behind when you crossed the finish line. A Bugatti Veyron at about 10 seconds for the quarter mile or just under still wouldn't have a chance. Even a high end sport bike which can get mid 9s stock would still not be able to do it. There might be a handful of highly tuned road cars of dubious street legality that could probably just about do it though, especially if they were allowed drag slicks.

The original statistic might have been 100km/h which would be something around 14.4 seconds for a quarter mile, something a Porsche 959 could easily beat in a standing quarter while still being relatively quick for the time, a contemporary 911 Carrera or 928, maybe even 944 Turbo could possibly also just beat that time but it certainly wouldn't be as decisive a victory as could be achieved in a 959.

SleeperCell surely those are the road cars, the rally cars made a bit more power/torque probably

I have heard the 0-100mph figure for them being cited as sub 9s somewhere before too

And the McLaren F1 does 0-100 in sub 7s afaik

What does the 0-100 times have to do with the 1/4 mile stat though? The Porsche and McLaren will still be behind you on the 1/4 run when they actually hit 100mph, and will finish the 1/4 at least 2 seconds after I did in my crappy Volvo at a constant 100 throughout... smile

As mentioned, maybe the original stat used 100km/h.

The most hideous vehicle out there by far is the mini bodied special, that was a BMW bodied special last year.

I'd like to see more of the production based classes as its becoming a bit detracted from it roots, still awesome stuff though except those bloated mini spoiling the view.

But that's not the case with the Dakar 959, the Dakar spec car was a fairly early development version of the 959 and had a naturally aspirated 911 motor producing some where between 280-300bhp. Considering the opposition (It wasn't until group B was banned that the likes of Peugeot turned their attention to the Dakar) the 959 just needed to be reasonably quick, tough and agile to beat the competition, which it was!

Porsche first did the Dakar in rally-spec 911s in 1984. I can't remember the results but I'm pretty sure it was including Rene Metge driving the lead car.

In 1985 they brought three 959s and a brace of service trucks however all three failed to reach Dakar.

In 1986 they brought three cars again with further development and again comprehensive back up. They got 1st 2nd and 5th if I recall correctly. Jacky Ickx placed second I think. Their main opposition was Mitsubishi which brought about six Shoguns with an A & B team. That might have been the year Ted Toleman ran a Metro 6R4 as well.

In any case I was lucky enough to see the 1986 winning car in Sharjah, UAE when they were shooting some promo stuff for the launch of the Cayenne and I and a couple of other local journos were invited along. Jacky Ickx was at the wheel of the 959 and I got a ride with a local rally champ in the 1984 car. I know the 959 was detuned but it still had a turbo set-up. The main memory I have is how bloody small, hot and uncomfortable it was in there bashing over dunes - to do it for 12 hours a day or more while navigating must have been some endurance feat...

It was quite a privilege as the engineer telling us about the cars said, "Usually they are in the museum in Stuttgart with a sign on the bonnet saying 'do not touch'".
