I went from a Focust ST260 to a 123d and don't regret it for a second. Once you're under way, you'd barel know it's a diesel and the performance really is astonishing. Yes I miss the sound of the ST (although the new one will only be a 4-pot anyway..) but in every other respect the 123d is a fantastic car. The 120d is also no slouch, but also better suited to motorway miles as it has slightly longer gearing.

Avoid the 2.0 petrol 1-series like the plague. Even the 125i isn't all that special, despite being a detuned 3.0.

I purchased a 120i m sport hatchback in November 2010, and have to say that I am delighted with it. The most attractive aspect of it was the price/age/mielage when compared with it's diesel equivilent. I do have the luxury of a fuel card, but average 31mpg, which is a serious improvement on my old R53 Cooper S! I really don't see the problem with the engine at all. Motorway driving is smooth and there is more than enough 'oomph' to use when required, and country driving is also enjoyable - you just need to make sure you're in the right gear! Perhaps I'm easily pleased, and the non-importance of the mpg is clouding my judgement, but to say it should be avoided like the plague is probably a little harsh... at the end of the day, the petrol vs diesel will determine the price you pay for your 1 series.

Largely agree. I would advise new owners to do some research on the depreciation though. They plummet like stones.

The extra torque on offer from the diesel makes the car so much more driveable in the real world.

The rear seats are a bit on the small side but in my m-sport build quality is very good.

Only issue about these diesel BMWS is the clutch judder problem.....

This is the only problem that if your car falls victim to it you may have a hard time from BMW getting it resolved.

Other than that the 120d Msport is a cracker. Never used to like them until the wife arrived home with a 116d Msport.

I can't believe how good a drive they really are and that I never give them a second thought. Then she had the clutch problems. In the end after a full dealer refund the wife fell for another, a 120d Msport.

In that time we had a lot of loaners and to be fair the lower spec petrols are pretty dire in comparison.

Mnonsense all the way cool
