Got this in the Audi/vag section but seems slow over there even though only posted this morning wink

Seriously considering an S8 V10, ticks all the boxes for what i want.

I am not concerned over the fuel bills but any owners provide any experience over the running costs, services, relaibility etc

Any feed back appreciated.

try on tyresmoke or forums.a8parts.co.uk as their audi forums are busier than here.

Nicely built car that suffers from mega depreciation. Not that quick and corners like a ferry. I test drove one before the RS4. Lots of toys but no drivers car. I'd opt for the diesel as it needs more torque to haul its ass.

Had mine for just over 16 months now.

No issues whatsoever with it, servicing is reasonable at my local dealership (compared to the AMG I used to have).

Fuel is a bit of a problem, mine has averaged 18.6 mpg, though as you say this is not really an issue then go for it.

Handling is above average for a car weighing over two tons and straight line performance, especially overtaking acceleration, is excellent.

I don't really do the mileage now so it was a good choice for me, quiet, quick and *very* comfy.

Good bit is that they seem to be holding their price well, though I'm sure that this will change when I come to swap.

Try to get the ceramic brake option, makes cleaning wheels a thing of the past. smile

As with most cars, newer and lots of options is better.

Thanks Dave.

What sort of range are you getting to a tank?

Not that fast?

Don't speak to the owners of Bruntingthorpe, in that case...

Not only is it ballistically rapid (180, 4 up through the beams, time after time at a previous Vmax event [the fastest saloon, so-passengered, there, to-date]) but the overall execution is exquisite.

A buddy of mine is a car detailer with the usual tick box résumé of Enzoesque exotica having passed beneath his micromeasured caresses - has always maintained this was the most stunningly presented package overall to have trundled from a factory gate.

The accusations of non-drivercentricism that Audi seem to attract by default rarely surface whenever I've hoofed one and as a large, luxury, über performosaloon, at c25-30 large, currently, it really is absurd vfm.

In short, a fantastic package that has enjoyed/suffered a life broadly below the radar - like an Alpina B7 - so few have the remotest idea of the reality.

In real life about 300 - 360 miles (think the tank holds 90 litres, can't find the manual)

Oh, and as Der writes (much more eloquently than I possible could) yes, they are pretty nippy. I'd rate it quicker than my old E55 from a standing start, though that's probably down to the traction issues which four wheel drive tends to solve on the S8.

I have driven one and would not call it slow remotely, agreed its not the last word in handling but you dont tend to buy a barge for that.

Having driven a RS4 i cant say that in a straight line there is massive difference, but they feel different in the delivery.

Mon plasir.

There's nothing worse than a bad dose of skinny punkism pouring scorn on the wanton profligacy of a sprawling slab of double tonnèd, lederhosen-massaging, invasionary destiny.

Ive always loved these cars, slightly out of my price range at the moment but who knows maybe in 6-9 months i could be in a position to buy one, im very interested in how:

daveenty compares it to his old E55 once on the move?, surely the E55 would annihilate it on paper due to more bhp, more torque, lighter and less power loss through the drivetrain? How was your old E55 in terms of reliability? i have been tempted by one of these since selling my W210 E55 a while back

Sorry, missed this due too a large intake of beer.

Didn't actually say *once on the move* but from a standing start. The Merc had traction problems and would struggle to grip, especially in damp conditions, whereas the Audi has four wheel drive and gets the tyres planted straight away. I would imagine that the AMG would be quicker once rolling due to the factors mentioned above, though they're two very different cars of course and shouldn't be compared like for like.

As for the reliability, mine was fine. A couple of electrical gremlins (fixed under warranty) and the usual supercharger "chirp". A very nice car, and I'd have another, but like the S8 too much to be changing again.

friend of mine had one and I drove it to Cardiff from Nottingham

comfy, quick, loads of toys, thirsty, makes a wonderful noise

his only negative comment was that tyres were pricey

for practical use I think the 4.2 TDI would be worth a look, but I wouldn't try to talk anyone away from the S8 V10

Some of this may be perception. I've got a D2 A8 4.2 Sport, and a B6 S4. The S4 definitely has more kick off the line. It also *feels* faster in a straight line, but it's one of those cars where a look at the speedo will tell you you're not going as fast as you think you are. OTOH, the A8 is the other end of that spectrum: it wafts along, and you look at the speedo and think "oo-er, but less right foot methinks".

FWIW, I find the A8 better balanced in the corners: the S4 is much more nose heavy, and understeers more. The A8's ride is a lot better too, despite having the sports suspension that was on the D2 S8s.

But a lot of this is down (IMO) to what you prefer: a small bodied rocket or a large bodied rocket, with the differences in feel that come with them.

S8 V10 is on my hit list, once the A8 gives out. Trouble is, the A8's so bloody reliable (and worth pocket change these days) that I don't have a good reason or excuse to trade up ATM.
