Evening,

Got in my car this morning to a smell as what can only be described as rotten cabbage, I haven't really used it much so hadn't noticed before.

There's nothing inside (food etc) that can be causing it so I can only assume it's the mats, they are damp but because the smell is that bad I can't tell if it's them or not!!

Anybody else got the same problem?

Damp and moist, like an old fridge which isn't far from the truth.
You'll just need to keep the windows open for a while to freshen it up, and if you have aircon, it's probably gathering a little army of furry bacteria too.

As said, probably needs a good run, windows open a bit, heater on at the feet.

I've had to take mine to work the last couple of days - it's worked wonders getting a nice run for an hour each way.

Gf's car on the other hand hasn't been out the town for weeks, it's soaking inside, windows are constantly steamed up.

My Disco stinks inside, walking through fields full of fertiliser with a dog don't do it any favours! Not cleaned in for over 18 months though!

Woke up this morning to a smell of rotten cabbage.

Turns out that the missus had let go of a quilt riser.

Just be bacteria caused by damp due to the weather. As above, take her for a reasonable run, run the heaters on the mats etc and dry her out. I wouldn't be too inclined to run with the windows down due to the fog.....

Its the damp from the carpets starting to stink.

Recirculate the AC for an hour or so. Also recommended you change the pollen filter. If its still bad a deodouriser will clear up the rest.

Air-con fungus/smell cleaner may help, search ebay for it. Negates the fungus/bacteria from your air-con's tubes etc.

Probably not the actual carpet, but more likely the sound deadening felt under the carpets. Gets wet from all the snow/slush carried in on passengers shoes. Will take ages to dry out properly. See if you can get you hand under and feel - probably absolutely sopping.

To speed it up, remove trims around the carpet and lift the carpet up - wedge stuff under it to help the air get in and around. Obviously not under the drivers side when you are using it. Won't do the floorpan much good if it's an older car.

On my 106 commuting/going to the tip shed, I cut and removed the drivers side carpet/felt so it didn't happen - stops the condensation in the inside of the screen and therefore the ice on the inside of the screen on cold mornings.

I use domestic moisture traps when not using my cars much. Really good but take them out before driving so you don't spill them!

For more regular use just a big silica gel pack or two.

Or a football sock or 3 full of cat litter wink When they get wet, stick them on the radiator to dry out biggrin

Won't that make it smell of cat's piss though? or do you mean fresh litter?

There must be a slight leaking somewhere. It shouldn't be like that. Once (upon a time...) I've had a missing plastic cap (around 2 inch diameter) from the bottom of my car, same stuff - nasty smell for days after driving in the rain smile I had to undo the whole interior to clean and dry it, and find a cap to fill the hole.

The Laguna had a leak as well around the aerial, but sorted.

With all the hooning about in the snow I did I have had the same problem, only on the drivers side though..

I have lifted up the carpet and stuck a 3k watt fan heater in there to dry it out.. So far so good pretty much dried out now after a few hrs. You can't see in the pic, but there is a thick felt like underlay stuck to the carpet.

The top side of the carpet still has a wiff to it, any ideas how to get rid of that?

I have one of those Vax carpet cleaning machines, was thinking of using that? Shake-N-Vac Fabreeze?

Am going to get a set of those universal thick rubber based mats from Halfords, that will keep it all dry then..
