Just make out a clear signed receipt identifying

  • the car (VIN, type, colour and registration number)
  • the recorded mileage
  • the total price
  • the deposit paid in cash and that it has been received by the seller
  • the date when you expect to get the car.
There's no special form for any of this. Just make it short and to the point. Best to have two copies, both people sign both copies and retain one each.

This will give you a binding contract and enough to sue for your deposit back if it all goes pear-shaped.
yes

Some years back I got a very similar AA-recommended template for this, which seems to do the trick. Never needed to rely on it though, thankfully...

To be honest in this situation, I would accept £50 as your serious and comming back, if you dont collect it you loose £50....
Agree with this. No more than 50 quid if I'm offering. Should they want a deposit, £100 tops.

You bought a LS400 and want a Corvette?

I'd phone the Police because someone's stolen your taste.

At least let it be a mk4

LS400 is one cheap barge I rather like, we naturally expect fully detailed ownership reports wink

Leave him a cheque for a £100 for him to hold.

Then when you buy the car give him the whole amount in cash and have him rip up the cheque.
I'd not accept a cheque as deposit. I did it once before, and it bounced, and I ended up in a protracted argument with the buyer who thought that I was wrong to try to deposit it, and wrong to sell it to someone else after it bounced and I couldn't get hold of him.

£100 cash should be plenty, though. It's just to show that you are genuine, and no-one leaves £100 if they are only half thinking of buying a car.
