My first what car of 2011

My Dad is starting to look for a new car. His current car is a E39 528i. It's about the right size for what he needs but he is often up in the Scottish Highlands and the alps walking or climbing in Winter and it's RWDiness is becoming a problem. He'd also benefit from some form of through loading, ideally an estate.

So his probable requirements are:

4WD
Good at long distance comfort, on a par with E39 at least.
MPG not critical but 30mpg on a motorway should be achievable.
Modern creature comforts
Probably Auto
Budget of maybe £10-15k though I didn't pry too much

I suggested:

X-Type Estate
Audi A4 (he reckons that the pedals are offset too much for his bad back, is this true? )
Audi A6
Volvo V70
Subaru Legacy

Any further thoughts?
