Bit of a Luddite on this subject, but the lever on an auto box is not mechanical is it? It's an electrical switch system? As such, can you take any lever and fit it to any car, or thereabouts?

Completely depends on the car, some are mechanical some electrical.

I'm looking to fit a retro lever to a Range Rover P38 box. The problem is that it is a 4 seed box and the original levers were for 3, so looking at whether other 'period' levers would be suitable. For example, XJ6 levers of old have a similar look and feel and the 90's ones were 4 speed I believe.
