I think so. Also there is some confusion over what is considered (by VX) to be fair wear and tear.
Surely pretty much everything would be wear and tear by that stage? If I had a 100k car I wouldn't complain if the clutch, driveshaft, radiator or starter motor went as things like that will need replacing by that point

20 years ago, I would agree with you, however, things have moved on a bit... cars should be able to make 200K easy these days.

Noticed an advert for the latest Astra estate (sorry, Sport tourer) in the paper earlier and nearly fell off my chair when I saw the price, now dont laugh but for a 1.3 diesel Astra estate they want (and I kid you not) £21,500 rofl
Mrs WR has just paid £16500 for a new 240bhp Astra VXR Arctic......smile
It's still not great VFM though is it, as it's now an "old" model, and being a Vauxhall will depreciate faster than I can count to 3
Have you seen the price of "used" Arctics?

It isn't the "old" model, it's the current VXR shape.

Name me another similar sized car new car that will do 152mph and 0-60 in 6.2 secs for the same money?

I know, but if that`s the case, what use exactly is a 100,000 mile warranty?

It`s just marketing guff as far as I can work out.

A bloke in work just bought a brand spanking new Tourer as a present before he left for his new job.

At least he's gone for the SRi Turbo. That's got 140 bhp and is a petrol (but only a 1.4).

List on that is £20,375 before extras (don't know what he had) although I suspect he paid substantially less due to employee pricing. To be honest I thought it looked pretty smart, though hardly exciting. Even if it's got to be new, I wouldn't say it's within £3k of the price of a 318i which has more power and very similar CO2.

like I added on edited post, its only available to 1st registered owner so vast majority won't be with first owner much into the 100K miles

Yes that's the cheap one. Long gone are the days of my R32, with 4WD, full leather, a proper engine of six cyllenders, costing £27k. Even the spaz wheel drive 4 pot snotter can mince up £40k these days.

Ok the car would, but would you expect the above components to last 200k without having to be replaced?

Focus ST-3 from £23,488
Megane 250 from £22,995
Mazda 3MPS from £21,595

All £5k more than the Astra, so erm... No.

Even longer are the days when you could have picked up a virgin R32 for 19k. How anyone who isn't getting someone else to fund pays £21k for a boring Golf is totally beyond me. Mind you if you look at the ordinary cars/daft prices thread, you can pay rather a lot for an old model non VXR Astra (even without battering the option list - £19k or more - laugh).

As for the £16.5k challenge, there's at least one Focus ST knocking around with delivery miles (so as new as the VXR) for £16.7k before negotiation - cheaper or free Mountune scratchchin Sound Vs Noise scratchchin

However, if you do want the Astra, I think I'd settle for @ 100 miles up, DNR & 3+ bags in a saggy back pocket!!!

It's only so they can offer you huge discount and still get what they wanted in the first place. I think its called marketing.
Doesn't help company car users though, which is a large proportion of their market.

You are of course right, but you play with the hand you are dealt with at a given time.
However, I'd hazard a guess that you could still pick up something new or newish with perceived painful running costs for an interesting price. Go older and approved used and it gets sillier - later AUC Z4M Coupes for comfortably under 20k. Enough to pay the warranty costs for a couple of years (damn you insurance & silly house deposit requirements!!!).

really? or are you just quoting book prices? book price i might add is not what wacky racer was paying.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2010-Ford-Focus-Petrol-2-5-S...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2010-RENAULT-MEGANE-Renault-...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2010-MAZDA-3-2-3I-TURBO-MPS-...

£5k more than the astra? ermm No.

These were 3 examples from just ebay that came up in about 1 min of searching so i have not been looking for the cheapest on the market.

All a little more expensive (i was suprised how much a megane is now compared to the last model)but also all the current models.
