Have Vauxhall gone stark raving f*cking mad?
Discussion
The car mentioned by the OP is actually £18300 on the Vauxhall website so a dealer will do you for £17k+. If you go for the 1.4 petrol it is £16600 and dealer will do it for £15k plus. Sounds pretty good for an estate that has lots of space and drives well now in the latest guise.

There's two sides to this.
Yes, you could see it as unacceptably expensive.
But you could also recognise that all models have upsized, so considering a new Astra estate is like considering a new Vectra estate about five or ten years ago, so the Insignia is more like a belated replacement for the Omega than a new Vectra.
Compare an older Astra with a newer Corsa like-for-like, looking at what you genuinely get for your money, and it might be more accurate.
It's visible across all car firms. See how smaller models have been introduced beneath the previous smaller models - BMW 1-series, Ford Ka, VW Fox etc. In terms of similar cars of actual size, they've come down in price. Don't be put off by the 'downmarket' badge - that's all part of the marketing. Get a family to continue buying Mondeos without them realising that they've basically switched from an equivalent Sierra to an equivalent Granada and you extract more cash. If they move from an old Mondeo to a new Focus the same size, they feel like they've downgraded.

I always thought Vauxhall were expensive.. my sister was considering a new car a while back and we looked at several small cars - Fiesta's, etc. Looked at the Vauxhall site and nearly fell off my chair when I saw how much a new Corsa was!
I know they say they're better quality and so forth now but I'd expect significant improvements to justify those costs!

So they're all more expensive and he still wouldn't get to choose the spec of the car? I'd stick with a brand new Astra, for which I could choose my own spec and options!
Thanks for playing
Do you really want me to find some that are the exact same price? perhaps i could find some which are exactly the same power and interior and exterior too with the same running gear? Thanks for playing
Did wacky racer say that he got the option to choose the exact spec of his? i dont think he did, chances are it was a car that was at a dealers just like the ones i found.
Thanks for playing.
As said previously the RRP is pie in the sky these days to make you think you're getting a massive discount or a great trade in.
Apart from the currency issues the increase in RRPs on all cars was aided by the government scrappage scheme where the price was inflated to allow for this discount.
The majority people I know who buy new vauxhalls buy preregistered ones as there's always plenty floating about at various specs.

I'm pretty sure the vauxhall dealer around here is giving people either £2500 for their old car, or paying the VAT for them. That's seems like a pretty good deal.
How much is an insignia now though? The astra was always their best selling car, I'm sure they can get away with putting the price up and seeing if anyone will buy it at that. The vectra, and now the insignia are the company cars.

I've just checked and its £21,400 for the Astra 1.3 CDTi 90 SE Sports Tourer, with no options. Website gives no indication if that's at the 17.5% or 20% VAT rate.Jw Vw said:

Noticed an advert for the latest Astra estate (sorry, Sport tourer) in the paper earlier and nearly fell off my chair when I saw the price, now dont laugh but for a 1.3 diesel Astra estate they want (and I kid you not) £21,500
£21,500 for a Astra diesel! can't u get a Golf diesel for around that price!?VW do a 1.6 TDI 90 Golf Estate for £17,775, but that engine is limited to the basic S trim. For comparison an entry level Focus 1.6 TDCi 90 Style Estate lists at about £18k, so broadly speaking all three cars when spec-ed to an equal level list at roughly the same price.

Good for you, a friend had one and it was a great car until it got nicked and i think that put him off it quite a bit. Come on boys, don't fall out..We're all friends here....

I was merely answering your question by saying there are a couple of hatches in that category that are very closely priced/specced to yours. And someone attempted to tell me they were all £5k more which i comprehensively proved was utter rubbish.
But then everyone has the right to choose the car they want and the astra still is a very good looking car.
