Got a mondeo estate here that we use to transport five spaniels and four adults in comfortably.

Stuck record mode - Merc 124 estate. Built for doggies.
I was going to agree with garlick here, but on looking for an example in the classifieds they are all above the 3k budget, and generally above 4k even yikes more expensive than their replacement model.

scary as i had a 1991year 300E in 1997 and it only cost me 5.5k then !!!!(admitedly mine had intergalactic milage having gone past 300,000 miles before the millenia and felt like it was only just run in!

Landrovers have one big downside for old dogs. It's a damn long way up for a short old dog.

You need a ramp! We got one when our previous dogs were getting on a bit, used to plod up and down it quite happily.

If you google 'dog ramp' you'll find any number of people selling ramps and even steps. Our's is a fairly simple plastic thing but there are all sorts of variations. The key is to have a good surface on it do the dog doesn't slip.

Our last dog suffered from spondylitis which fused the vertebrae in his spine together, but for as long as he could walk he was able to get in and out of the car using the ramp.

Volly V70 should have sprung mesh curtains built into the rear seats that unroll and clip into the roof.
Not obvious until you have used one.
Legacies have these too (at least, my GTB does).
