Two unconnected people have told me they know people in the USA who own 4WD 3 or 5 Series BMWs, made only for the US market.

Is this true, or are they mad...?

They aren't mad but they are wrong.

BMW make 4x4 3's and 5's in most markets - the UK is the exception (currently). In the past they sold the 4x4 cars here too, but years ago.

BMW 535i XDrive anyone? http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/vehicles/20...

BMW 328i xDrive? http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/content/vehicles/20...

Sold in US and Europe.

"iX" or "Xi" models.

I imagine a 335d mapped with 4wd could be interesting !

Probably would be but sadly it's not an option!

C

ETA: a 335d 4x4 is not an option even in countries where 4x4 is an option...

Not trying to argue but I am confused by this. They aren't mad and they are right, right?

I think he means they're wrong in the sense that they weren't only sold in USA.

Certainly no RHD E9x or E6x exist. Same with the two previous 3 series and one previous 5 series. I have seen ONE RHD E34 xi model but not sure if that was a conversion.
I've only seen E34 5-Series models.

yes mate of mine had one in touring configuration.

As it would happen i was running around in a Merc 300E 4matic at the time too .... must have been a trend from the early 90's

Loads of them here in Switzerland. A popular choice. Either they are very good or people here have no imagination.

Imported, all LHD.

Also seen E30 iX models too.

Admittedly, not seen any of the newer iX models (E60/E90 etc) here in the UK but as mentioned above, plenty in Switzerland where it appears to me the X3/X5 are (unsurprisingly) not the vehicle of choice for the Alps.

In a thread from a while back discussing the 'merits' of the X1, I questioned whether sales of the X3/X5 would suffer if 4WD versions of the 3 and 5 Series were sold here. Me feeling is no.

I saw an advert on a German TV station (dodgy pub football feed) recently for a 4x4 7-Series.

Beemers aren't usually my bag. An AWD BMW saloon sounds good to me though.
