I prefer rwd when it dry or slightly damp & if the road is soaking prefer 4wd.

What drivetrain do most people prefer to drive in this day & age?

I enjoy rwd for fun & steering feel the most.

My own thoughts:

RWD: tarmac when dry, damp, wet or sodden and on snow with reasonable grip, because I feel more in control. That's on road or track.
4WD: any surface where 2WD wouldn't be practical, so really slippery snow and ice, gravel or wet mud.
FWD: For laughs now and then, or occasional hire cars on holiday. No more than that thank you.

I prefer to drive a car that handles well, whether it is FWD, RWD, or 4WD.

We have 3 cars in the stable, 1 is RWD, 2 are FWD. All 3 are fun!

Depends on what the drive-train's connected to?

It depends on circumstance. I hate FWD, RWD is my weapon of choice for track / fast road, when conditions are peachy.AWD is best in crap conditions.

So given the choice of a Subaru Justy or a Ferrari F40, you'd be whipping out the Kleenex for the dog-eaters shopping car?

Even if there was one single car that offered all three of those options, I'd only be able to tell you which drivetrain I thought suited that car the best.

Would be a better thread if it was a poll that no one could make comments upon. Just a straight forward set of stats.

Anyway :-

1st Mid engined RWD (own one)
2nd Front engined RWD (own two)
3rd ??? Mid engined 4WD ??? never driven so unsure
4th Front engined 4WD (own one)
5th fwd (had a couple of them before I could afford a good car wink )

RWD but it is allegedly over-hyped.

Think the poll thread has been done,so was just interested in reasons which was prefered.

Notice you have mid engined RWD,i havent driven this layout & you prefer it to front engined RWD,why the preference? is it better grip with engine nearer the driven wheels?

RWD is complete shyte.

The only version worth a fvck is Variomatic CVT as used on old DAF cars. And even that's bks.

The sole reason people buy RWD cars is to wear it as some ridiculous badge of honour, in a desperate attempt to impress other tragic internet forum users.

More grip cornering and accelerating, braking feels more stable and un related to performance there is something nice hearing the engine behind your head.

Less weight in the nose of the car means turn in is much more direct and steering feel is much keener. Lower polar inertia helps with direction changes too, along with mid bend balance feeling very 'pure' due to the weight distribution. It would be my 'if you could only have one drive type' choice too. Just something nice about being pushed along by a busy little engine a foot from your head, combined with the shape it gives a car.

I don't massively prefer one drive type over another - I like playing with them all although I have a slight leaning to rear wheel drive.
