Friend of mine is having his first child this year and is being badgered by his missus to get rid of his 350Z as it is not suitable as his only car when the baby comes....

She has a Focus for the family duties.

What do you PHer parents do in this situation? Have you worked around having a 2-seater? I guess the main issue is if the 4 seater car breaks or needs to be garaged for any reason.

He is fairly resigned to getting rid of it (very reluctantly) so is also working out what 4 seater he could get for £8k-ish that would remain PH-like and be fun to drive...with "reasonable" running costs i.e. similar to the 350Z.

I suggested RX-8 or Mazda 6 MPS.....any other suggestions?

This thread will hopefully assist me too as I am planning a family too and am in the same situation (Civic and MX5 in my household).

I've never understood this. Why does a family with two adults and one child need two cars that can take all of them?

If he does need four seats, the standard PH answer is a 3-series.

99% of the time, there's no need for two sensible cars. For family days out, take the Focus. For taking the child to nursery etc, use the 350Z.

The only thing to bear in mind is that until the child is a little older, it must be rear facing and if transporting it in the front seat, the airbag must be disabled. If the 350Z has no means of switching off the airbag, that could be a problem.

If he must have 4 seats, sell the 350Z and upgrade to a 996 wink

My wife insisted on this, especially when the second baby arrived. I wouldn't mind but I haven't had the baby seats in my car for about 9 months now. She has now agreed getting rid of the Boxster wasn't the best idea and there really isn't the need for two practical cars. Coupe here I come!

If that were a valid reason everyone would have a second car just in case the first broke down.

There is no need at all to get rid of the 2 seater. If the Focus did break down at a critical time, use alternatvies like taxis or a hire car like anyone else would.

If he absolutely had to sell, I'd definitely go for a RX8.

Thats because women are controlling. They cant have the man drive a two seater and them drive a sensible car which is perfectly adequate.

Really no need to sell the 350Z.

Once he's got a little one and post pregnancy missus in tow he'd give anything for a bit of escape now an again. Another practical 4 seater is not it. I'm so glad I kept my 2 seater and didn't cave to the missus.

If he needs to transport the little one when rear facing the airbag can be disabled, though it will be a small garage or dealership job.

We've 2 children, both under 3. Family car is the Golf and my car is the MX5.

It works for us.

I have 2 kids under 6, one practical family estate car, and one 2 seater which is my daily commuter. I bought the 2 seater last year, having used the rear seats in my previous car once in 2 years.

Yeah, I've heard this "back-up" reasoning elsewhere and agree that it is nonsense. We've a child and just the one car, if it breaks down or is otherwise unavailable, we'll manage. That's despite living in a semi-rural location. If the car is a break-down worry, then replace it or get good roadside recovery insurance.

Tell the friend to keep the 350z if he wants to. Personally, I've found that my car desires have adjusted a bit since becoming a parent; I now have a weird need for a Subaru Legacy Outback, and the smallest car I could contemplate seat-wise is a 911 (the fantasy/idea is to be able to drive the whole family on nice days out, otherwise I'd likely just not get much of a chance to drive it).

I'm apparently not allowed to sell the T350. We rent when we need a sensible car.

I have a 350Z and don't think there is any way to disable the airbag frown

How about a slightly longer, 4-seat 350z then if he must?

Nissan 350GT Skyline - same engine and drivetrain, even have ISOfix IIRC.

This might still be for sale: http://www.350z-uk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&am...

I had two 2 seaters, one a classic and one modern.

I replaced the modern 2 seater roadster with a coupe/hatch - at least it has 5 seats smile

I still have my 2 seater classic car.

If the seat is all the way back, is it still an issue?

I thought a Nissan dealership has to give you the option of switching it off, even if there isn't a key/switch in the car.
