My current car is no more, i need to replace it immediatly as i'm due back at Uni tomorrow. Has anyone got a cheap 106 gti, or something similar (cheap but not boring and fairly good on fuel).

Funds are very tight, so i dont want to waste the money i have on something thats going to break down. I've been searching the net all day but i've had little joy, everything that looks good for the right money has allready been sold.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Replace 106 GTI with Saxo VTS and you'll have more luck

(awaits cries from morons calling the 106 a classic and the Saxo a chav chariot!)

So many lexus lights and window tints.... frown

Gutted the ax isn't cheaper, would have loved one of those.

Any other idea's that might fight my criteria?

Buy one without Lexus lights and window tints?

I'm thinking under a grand, i know its a lot to ask for but, i know there must be something out there usually i'd get a mk1 golf cab, or a mk2 gti 8v for less but they seem to be very thin on the ground at the moment.

I had a 106 rallye before so i thought i'd give the 106 gti a look. I'm not stuck on hatchbacks though, open to all idea's.

How about the 2.0 16v Citroen ZX, always loved them and there is one or two in the classifieds relatively cheap, Similar engine as the 306 GTi-6 I believe

Same engine as the 306 S16, the GTI-6 got uprated a fair bit.

For a GTI-6 for under a grand try the Xsara VTS

what are they like on petrol? I need something fairly economical (which is why i was looking at the smaller petrol engines)

My GTI-6 did about 30mpg, would drop though when pushed hard. My Saxo managed about 35mpg, fast road cams and never, ever driven slowly

I was going to say go old school and get a 205gti, however just looked on the classifieds and they are going for ridiculous money, one on there for £5,995 with 102k, and one for £11,995 with 29k, which shirley must be some sort of sick joke.

I know, i looked at 205's to start with and the prices have rocketed. same with the golf mk2 and the AX. Real shame tbh.

up to 30 is a little on the low side for me, 30 and up is all good though.

I've driven identically specced examples of the base 106 and Saxo within minutes of each other in the past and I can confirm they are identical in feel, performance etc. It's possible the go-faster ones vary more than the cooking ones, but logically the VTS can't be that different from the 106 GTi...

But, even if the biggest difference is the badge, now they've been labelled as chav charriots (and now that the burberry wearing classes aspire to them as such) they've been irrevocably tainted. Grossly unfair, but true.

How about a Megane Coupé? Plenty in the classifieds for around a grand (1.6 & 2.0). Or Ibiza GTi? Annoying trawling through the PH adverts that they leave all the sold ones cluttering it up, can't see a way to filter them out either.

The 106 GTI and the Saxo VTS both have a really poor image. The idea of buying a 106 and paying more for a better though still shockingly bad image is nuts.

This is the main problem, some of them would be perfect but alot of them are sold, its such a waste of time.

Whats the megane like on fuel? i dont know much about puma's, but could be tempted into one...
