Any ideas on the current scrap value of cars? Yes, I appreciate I should just phone a few local scrap yards.

Been given a figure of £350 salvage from the insurers on a write off. Seems very optimistic to me.

Just phone up scrap yards, you'll get different prices if they've got to come and collect it.

I sold my salvage car to the guy who came to collect it after the accident for the value on the engineers report without any haggling.

It's roughly £90/tonne if you take it there.

The insurance quote will, I assume, be taking into account the fact that other bits of the car are worth money, e.g. 2nd hand lights units, engine etc. and it's not just the weight of the metal.

The car is driveable so no probs delivering it. I appreciate that if I stripped the car myself I could probably get the £350 but I don't see why I should do it nor do I see why I should be out of pocket/time for this.

Worth about £1500 retail.

Not sure on the catagory, I've only skimmed the report.

If its a write off they pay the total sum and take it away or are you trying to buy it back ?

If it is the same as mine recently the offer gave me £1700 for a car they valued at £2000 and the cat D car to keep or sell on.

The Buy Back value used by insurers is usually 10-15% of the book price or the price that the insures agreed with you.

Looks like they're doing this. I don't want to keep it. I'd rather have the cheque for the full amount. If the insurance think they can get £300+ salvage for it then good luck to them, I won't be able to.

You are allowed to reject their offer, but it may be worth a call to the people who compiled the report for the insurers as if they valued it they should know someone who can buy it at that price. Like I said I got cash for mine from the bodyshop that collected it from me, what they do with it and make from it is up to them.

Fair enough, usually their allowances are very generous IME as they don't want to deal with it.

Sure you couldn't stick it on Ebay and make a few quid ?

The £350 salvage price they have offered is what its worth to someone to repair it or strip it.

What car is it? And how much damage?

If you take it to a regular scappy you might get £100-£150.

It's a 1998 Corolla with a damaged rear bumper, panel and hatch.

I was thinking £150 from the scrappy at best.
