smile Even a wingless Formula Ford with a Fiesta engine will outrun a supercar around a race track. Add massive slicks, downforce and times the power by five to get to F1 and the results are very dramatic! biggrin
So...educate me here. How many seconds a lap difference around the top gear test track do you think you'd get if you fitted racing slicks to the Kia C'eed? I ask because I'm always told that the tyres are the one component to make the most difference to a car's performance but i'm wondering how night and day the difference is.
DUUUUURRRRR! wink
You know you should just go fk yourself Petyan.

very enlightening, and there is no doubt that F1 cars are significantly faster than even track cars, but that side by side video is misleading as to the scale of the difference insofar as the 2 video locations are not identical, the F1 coverage is quite a bit closer to the corner (use the end of the rumble strips as a datum to see by how much)

Really? It was?

Regardless, seeing Hunt v Watson v Lauda is definitely entertaining.

EVO mag have recently put semi slicks onto their Skoda Yeti and recorded some hilarious times around Bedford. I think it's probably underestimated exactly how quick a Formula One car is. Rob gives the Brands Indy lap as an example. There aren't even too many fast corners on the Indy Circuit. I suspect that the GP Loop with its fast corners would allow an F1 car's phenomenal downforce to really come into play.

Considering the BMW brakes / tyres have just delt with what must be at least twice the KE of the F1 car, that actually aint too bad by the M3!!

Just for once, I'd like to see one of these 'comparison/race' vids where all the cars launch at the same time - maybe the F1 car could lap twice vs the road cars once? To me, they always look ridiculously contrived otherwise.... fun though!

You'd also get to see the phenomenal acceleration of an F1 car. There's nothing quite like seeing a really quick road car being maxed whilst an F1 car just breezes past biggrin

Incidentally, this is at a totally different scale of course, but I was in a single seater race last year where we had a pace car out for a few laps and the pace was unbelievably slow. I was in danger of falling asleep! I was quite a few cars back at the time (different class, same race), and couldn't see the pace car, but I joked with my Dad after the race about the pace car being driven by a pensioner, and apparently the pace car was absolutely caning it round biggrin The difference in performance of a single seater, in fact any single seater (even my slow one) is really quite shocking!

I have driven a single seater around Brands Hatch, seriously quick compared to a road car.

Magnus, do you recall they did exactly that with the Renault Avantime on Top Gear? Put track day rubber on, then re-run, then suspension, then re-run etc.

The thing with fitting slicks to a Kia Cee'd is that the suspension isn't set up to take them.
Yes I do actually, it didn't make all that much difference IIRC.

Then Clarkson was moaning because he just wanted to increase power.
...And as I remember, after they'd lost weight, improved suspension, fitted slicks and big brakes... they DID increase power, and it DID make a difference: but only because the car had the other parts so it could deal with it.

My thoughts precisely. I suppose those drivers do earn their money.
IMO, one of the few sports where the sportsmen do actually deserve the money they earn.

Exactly. A lot of them don't make it home. Risk / reward on top of the outrageous skill.
