plus, what's with the pit crew guy just wearing a balaclava?
biggrin And don't forget the whole pit stop includes that agonizing 50mph trawl down the very long pit lane - all the while the DTM car was well into three figures. We all know how quick you get dropped on the motorway if you're joining at 50mph and someone storms past in the fast lane at 100mph. Imagine staying at 50mph for 30 seconds and then acclerating to catch that car in under a minute biggrin

I was amazed by how close the AMG black got to the DTMM car in a straight line! Watch out of the final bend, and the DTM car obviously carries MUCH more apex speed, slides past the Black, but then all the way to the finish line the Black is nailed to it's boot !!

Normally, straight line power isn't the trump card of racing cars, especially with AMG, who are right at the centre of the "power war" biggrin. F1 is perhaps the exception to this, as 800bhp in 600kg is unfeasibly rapid! F3 (Senna and Brundle's stop before F1 back in their day) cars even today have just 220bhp and ~500kg, which is less than a Caterham R500, Ariel Atom, Brooke etc. The Mclaren F1 Le Mans car actually had less power than the road car smile It's braking and cornering where the real performance starts.

my brooke 260 RR weighs 550 kg and the cosworth duratec engine produces 260 bhp and 200 lbft of torque
this gives a power to weight ratio of 480bhp/ton, but this falls pretty dramatically when you add the driver , and more so with the passenger also on board

autocar timed this particular car at 3.33 secs for 0-60 , and 7.68 for 0-100, and 12.15 for 0-100-0
this was running with semi-slick Toyo R888's

there was a question to colin goodwin in autocar in 2007/8, asking how the brooke 260RR would compare with a 1960's F1 car
he felt that it would compare very favourably with an early 60's f1 car over 1 lap, but would be annihilated by a late 60's car

The 3 litre Formula took power outputs to another level, with circa 400bhp, and then of course at the end of the 60s wings came in and it just went from there.

How is the Brooke incidentally? I've never met anyone who owns one! I adore the shape and concept, but my experience amounts to a horrible ride around Bedford in one that didn't have a seat or belts that did up properly, so I was moving around like a loose suitcase biggrin Oh, and he couldn't go above 4k because of the noise. I see they do one with 400bhp now smile

Except in his opening line he says:

"Formula one is the ultimate challenge of skill speed and bravery"

Actually, I think you'll find it's Moto GP smile

Love these sorts of vids. Really puts it into perspective just how slow our road cars really are.

This is a goodun - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VW5YyAqR6Xs

Fiat Bravo HGT vs Ferrari 550 vs Ferrari F1

Bearing in mind that the HGT isn't exactly a slouch on the road, and obviously, neither is the 550.

There's yet another (I was unable to find) from the early '80s with, I believe, Nikki Lauda vs. 928 vs. some hatch.

found it:

robm77---its great fun,and very different to any other car i've driven

brooke obviously did some more development work after your drive ---it now has seats, decent seat-belts , and possibly the best thing about it is the wonderful noise from the cosworth duratec from about 3k rpm to 7 k(rev limiter cuts in at 7.6 k )
please see the thread in' readers car' titled' brooke cosworth 260 RR'

when and where did you drive it ?

Thanks. I haven't got the money right now (or the garage space), but they really stand out for me because of the purity of the design, both visually and from an engineering point of view. Really lovely concept. I'd love one one day if they're still making them when my time comes! smile

I didn't drive it, just had a ride. It was at an Autocar trackday at Bedford Autodrome about 3 or 4 years ago. I went on a few such track days, and they were all attended my manufacturers offering you drives and rides in their cars (on previous days I tried an NSX and a Noble M400). On this day, attended by Radical, Atom, Caterham, Brooke and a few others, I'd previously signed up for a good long ride in a Radical (which was awesome, and responsible for me ditching my Caterham race car and going into single seaters!), but got chatting to the guys who built the Brooke and, whilst they wouldn't let me drive as it was their only development car, they gave me a three lap ride in it. The most memorable thing was that the belts were loose even on their tightest setting, and there was no seat at all, so it was horrendously uncomfortable (especially for me with my dodgy back). The chassis balance was good though, and even at the modest rpm we were allowed to use the engine felt good (260 I think, like yours).

robm77---i've just come off writing on the' readers car 'thread about the brooke 260 RR, and was gob-smacked that you had written essentially the same thing about the purity of design that was a major attraction of this car for me

please do read this other thread

the car you were driven in would have been my car---i bought the prototype , as the first private owner direct from the factory
the car apparently had a lot more work done to it after bedford , and before autocar, octane , topgear and evo got their hands on it

do you have any pictures ar any other literature etc relating to the car or that bedford day?

Hi there. That's a coincidence!

I'll check out the thread over the weekend smile The Brooke really stands out for me as being just a lovely thing, and also totally different from other cars of that genre. Whereabouts are you based? I'd love a closer look at the car sometime.

I'll look through my photos on my home PC when I get back from work to see if I can find any of the Brooke. I'm not sure I did take any sadly; it was so unbelievably wet that my camera stayed in the car most of the day if I remember rightly. There is a video in a Radical from that day - before I went out in the Radical the driver did a lap to see if the track was safe (it was extremely wet), and that lap's on You Tube. I can't link from work, but just search for "Radical Bedford". My Elise is the dark blue one at the start of the clip - the Brooke doesn't feature in the video though I don't think. I'll also speak to a friend of mine that I attended the day with to ask if he's got any pictures of the Brooke for you.

I live near J5 M3 and have friends on the coast, so although I've not been to a Breakfast Club yet, am often at Goodwood and in that area. I'll check out that thread now smile
