So...... few months back decided to get a 2nd car as we had a dog incoming. Netted out on a nice Golf GTI DSG, which I have to say I think is excellent - it's a great little car.

However..... we've got a black labrador and the more he grows the more I think it's going to be a bit of a squeeze for him, especially on the odd long journey.

So now I'm thinking I might bite the bullet and like a proper dhead get an estate.

Budgets around £15k and at the moment I reckon it's gotta be a BMW 330i M-sport Touring (NOT the oil burner version!).

It needs to be reasonably nippy, excellent build quality and - as much as is possible with an estate - be a good enjoyable drive when pressing on a bit.

Any other thoughts??

Cheers

I have said BMW but the diesel version and it's still quite nippy yet refined :P

Z3 Breadvan? Not sure it's big enough for a Lab, but it's fun to drive and quick!

I'd vote on the Audi front too. Could get an older RS6 estate or even an A4 S-Line for decent money.

The RS4/6 is a great shout - but in my budget they're a bit older than I'd like. Although I am tempted to up the budget by £10k to get into an RS4 Avant!

Not really a fan of the Jag to be honest, isn't it a bit old man?

Mondeo is out simply because I'm a bit of a snob but would be a good option otherwise!

Not a fan of estates tbh, always look fuddy duddy IMO. Personally would rather look for different thrills and go for a 4x4:

If it had to be an estate then I think something like this would be my preferred option:

Hmmm didn't realise how cheap RS6's have become...... maybe that could be the answer.

Aren't they a bit st in the dynamics department though?

When I had 3 large dogs I had an A4 estate. 2 Mastiffs and a Shepherd x Rotti and all 3 fitted in the back biggrin

Slight overkill to get an estate because of a labrador, if you had 2 then fair enough but think of it this way, how does the size of the Golfs boot compare with the size of his dog bed? Unless the dog bed is huge then I'd think the boot is bigger and he'll only be spending short periods of time in the boot (certainly compared with his bed!).

However as Estate's go, and there are some nice looking ones out there, maybe a 3.0 Legacy/Outback, A6 3.2, 159 3.2, Mondeo ST220.

Just got an X-Type estate (2.0D frown) and the dog has plenty of space. He did fit in the back of the Leon but it was a bit tight, and you therefore lose all use of the boot.

I'm liking the look of those boot protectors. Though perhaps not the bright pink one on the X-Type page.

Not a lot in it. Same basic motor, 2.2 slightly more power and I think slightly higher state of tune (bhp/litre wise) in stock trim. But slightly worse on fuel. Think it was introduced to meet newer emissions requirements more than anything.

Pre 2003 3.0 V6 AWD is the way to go though! biggrin

Our two black labs love the back of my new (to me) A6 Avant. Driving dynamics aren't a patch on the TT it replaced, but they don't seem to mind much.

Like the boot liners, but they're not cheap!! We have a £20 eBay plastic liner and a couple of old duvets - seems to do the job just as well.

Budget was quite tight. I would have liked a 2.2D in SE or Sport Premium spec but there aren't many around for £7K. Ended up with a 2.0D SE.
3.0 would have been great, but I need to cut down my fuel costs.
