I do have a volvo 850 saloon available. 2.5l 10v. 10 months MOT and a few months tax. Only want £475 for it. 159k but seriously good nick all things considered. Drives spot on with good service history. Have a look in the classifieds.
Took it in exchange for the Primera and have it insured now (25y/o 3 years no claims, moderate area - £630) but it wasn't part of the plan for selling the Primera so need it gone really.

That sounds odd. My car was written off (Cat-D) and they just reduced the amount of my settlement by the amount they valued the salvage at and the car was still mine to fix or do what I liked with.
You may not be an authorised breaker but I can't see the issue with stripping it for the good bits that you could store in the shed/garage then weighing in the shell and any bits beyond repair.

Called the insurance company this morning. Apparently they'll let me buy the car if my intention is to repair it and put it back on the road, but if my intention is to stip it for parts, then I'm not allowed to do that, as I'm not an authorised breaker. Bum
What you tell them need not be the same as what you do, assuming it's no worse than a cat c.Garett said:
Saab 900/9000 or 9-3 you will even manage a 9-5 for £1k but it might be a bit ropey.
Personally I'd go for the 9000, a lot of car for £1k and you should get a decent one for that.

looks like a 2.3 LPT so 170 bhp
Might be a bit late, but I have a 2001 9-5 2.3 that I need to sell and would sell for £1k.Personally I'd go for the 9000, a lot of car for £1k and you should get a decent one for that.

Good spec, inc. leather, heated & ventilated seats, cd etc. Proved very reliable to date. 130k miles, but previous owner owned it from 2 years old. He had dropped the sump, and then changed the oil every 6k with fully synthetic as I have. It's good to go for many years - will easily do over 30 on motorway.

Due to reasons I will go into at some future point, it looks like my beloved ST220 is a total loss. Whilst I wait for the insurance to pay up, I want a car I can buy this week. This is most likely a temporary purchase, just to get me mobile again until I can get a proper car.
Have a look at the condition of this.....- Under £1000
- Needs to be able to carry me and my kids
- Something I'll be able to sell/trade in reasonably easily in a few months
- Something that's not going to let me down, or leave me stranded 100 miles from home
- Something that achieves at least 30mpg on the motorway, and won't cost a bomb to insure
- If it's fun or interesting, so much the better

Won't do better for 900 quid, you'll get at least 30 on the motorway ( I get 34-35mpg on a run from the 2.5)

I was going to suggest you'd probably get a T5 Volvo 850 for that money but unless you are intending to use the car as a trade in against your new one (when the insurance comes through) my choice would be a well spec'd diesel of some sort that was going to be really easy to re-sell.
No point in ending up in a car that's fun for a month and having it stuck on your drive for the next six months trying to sell it.
Why can't I think sensibly when it's me buying things?????

It looks like I'm going to buy that Octavia vRS actually. I'm going to go and look at it tomorrow. If it's a good 'un, I'll get that and it'll be a permanent replacement.
Did I read it wrong or was your budget a grand?!give this "little" beauty a go!

- for a grand, it looks like an absolute steal! low miles, not many owners, good history. Got to be worth a bash :-)

Just had the shock of my life when I came to get insurance quotes. Despite the 8 years protected NCB, it's going to cost me more to insure a group-9 Primera than it would previously have cost me to insure the ST220. This doesn't bode well for my future of interesting car ownership. All thanks to some spilled diesel on the road.
£900 insurance on a £900 car! How do people manage to insure cars? I'm looking at whatever I get being slightly more long-term now. Not a happy camper!

Up until a week ago I was paying £2875 to insure a £1600 car....
