We all remember our Dads cars, so which was the best and why?

For me it was a 1988 BMW 320i SE 2 door. He's had better cars since, but that car made me feel as though the family had made it. I loved the hunt for the right car, the test drives and finally the collection. Despite not being a child, I was still young enough to be impressed enough to love showing it to my mates.

Great idea for a thread.

As a kid I was really chuffed my dad bought 2.3 Sierra rather than the 2.0. (Or was it a Cortina! ) lol

That is pretty much as good as it got other than a Triumph Spitfire he bought for my mum! extra lol

I'm too ashamed to name it, because even his 'best' was absolutely terrible, just like his current car.

Though he did have an Alfa Romeo (Giulietta I think), but that was before I was born.

ETA- Looking back at my Dad's cars, it's quite hard to see where my petrolheadishness (technical term) came from scratchchin

Ford Escort Mk2 - FMP548V hehe
Followed by a Mk4 (numberplate is my password so not gonna post that tongue out).

Together they ignited my interest in cars from a kiddish "I like cars" into a full blown obsession with them, and old Fords in particular rofl

All my dads good cars were in his youth. He had a Toyota Corolla 1.6 Twin Cam and a Fiesta XR2i in the late 80's.

Then I came along and since then he's had 3 Vauxhall company cars ('94 Cavalier, '07 Vectra and '10 Insignia) a 1998 Peugeot 406 and a 'Champagne', or baby sick, coloured 2001 Avensis

I can remember my Dad getting many company cars, but the one I remember most was a Vauxhall Omega V6 (I think it was the Elite? It had a 3 litre engine though). This was automatic, but it had this 'S' button on the gear lever, and when he pressed it and accelerated it was quite an experience. Most cars up until then had been reasonably standard cars, so that was quite an exciting new car to me.

My Dad had a 10 second fibreglass front ended 55 chevy with gas biggrin, still the fastest straight line car i've ever been in. Baby blue with 'money box' appropriately written on the side.

He still has a 350 '69 vette which will be in my hands in London soon :whstle:

I distinctly remember growing up around stupidly fast Yank trucks and cars .......

Hmmm, of the one's he had that I remember (shocking collection hehe)
  • Renault 12 Estate
  • Volvo 240 Estate
  • Volvo 760 Estate
  • Rover Metro
I'll pick the 240 as the best, because I learnt to drive in it. RWD and bombproof.

However, he liked my Caterham thumbup

Loved my Dads 1985 E30 320i coupe. Loads of memorys coming back now! Alpine white, the checkered pattern seats and angled dash, awesome. Bite mark in the foam rubber boot spoiler from a Monkey at Longleat.

He was always a Ford man (MK1 Escort Sport, RS2000 etc) but the most memorable car that springs to my mind is an early 80's Saab 900 "classic" in blue. I think I liked the way the bonnet opened and it wasn't a car anyone else seemed to have. He also got me a large brown plastic model of the car from the dealership which I still have today (I think I ate the mudguards though).

My uncle was always the one with the cool cars but he was younger and slightly reckless smile

None. They were mostly terrible.

Capri 1.3 > Beetle > Renault 6> Renault 14 > Renault 5 > Renault 5 > Renault 5 > Renault Clio > Peugeot 306

The Peugeot was mildly fun (1.9XRDT) and once I could drive, the fastest car ever. Honest.

My Dad had a few cars I thought were cool over the years, my favourites mostly have memories attached to them.

1983 Volvo 340 GL - only a 1.4 but we did a few epic father/son road trips in that car.

1982 Austin Princess - I loved it because it was huge to me at 5.

Not sure of the year but a VW Type 2 kombi van, the aircooled noise has always stayed with me.

1986 Granada 2.8 Ghia X - he got this when I was about 9 and it had the most toys I had ever seen in a car.

But my favourite was his Saab 99GL that was mint and I remember falling out hugely with him when he sold it before I was old enough to drive.

ETA: An honourable mention to my late Grandfather who in 1993 bought a 1990 Astra GTE 16 Valve despite living on the most car crime ridden housing estate in the North East and drove it like an 18 year old pretty much all the time.
