RE: SOTW: Volkswagen Jetta GTI
Discussion
Great Write up for SOTW and great car too. Oh the memories, I too had my head out of the sunroof in my dads Saab 900i, and often went in the boot, for some strange reason.
So a practical Gti. I had a Mk2 Golf 1.3 that was done up like a Gti and miss it, just needed more power, like a real Gti. This thinkg will make a good Euro car and would sell well in Germany I'm sure.
One of Best SOTW so far IMO.

Garlick,
you are the man. Admitting to having been the last kid to be picked up for footy
takes some balls. (honest)
On a different note: Have you ever driven the Jetta yourself. It is pretty lame.
110 Bhp for a car like that was not much, even back then. This example is a nice survivor
nevertheless... till now.

As the owner of this car and a m3 evo i have to say it really does go very well i was actualy shocked with how well! i happyily invite you to come drive it I understand the stigma atached to the jettas there not the best lookers but are a great car. I hope whoever buys it keeps it something like standard.you are the man. Admitting to having been the last kid to be picked up for footy

Just echoing what a few others have said on here.
The Jetta mk2 16v is an absolutely fantastic car. My Dad has this one:
Its a 1987 16v with rare headrests in the rear seats. Was a complete dog when we got it but looks great now. Has a completely standard exterior but the engine has been lightened and balanced with a full stainless exhaust. Only has 78,000 miles too.
Goes like a rocket, and completely pees all over my golf mk2 16v. The Jetta even spins the wheels in third gear when you're going for it
With my other beast both getting some brake attention
someone should really buy the shed of the week. You won't be disappointed. We know our VW's and the Jetta are no slouches, nor are they Grandad's cars.

I'm glad to see some other people are aware of it handling slightly better than the Golf, even though its the ugly sister.
A friend who used to race a group A Golf Gti 16v in the old BTCC always said the Jetta Gti was actually a better handling car than the Golf Gti; this didnt make any difference when it came to selling them as no one wanted them because it was a Jetta and not a Golf and everyone wanted a golf Gti!
It did handle better since it didnt have a big hole in the back. Had a Black 16 Valve GTI big bumper model in the early 90's. Was a fantastic car, fast, handled well and without the GTI badges was a real sleeper which surprised many including my mates Nissan 200 Turbo - Happy days !
Back in the late '80's you had no choice, all the badges were nicked off my 16V Golf the day it was delivered (anyone else old enough to remeber the Beastie Boy craze?)Gunk said:

Yeah, wasn't that a joy? I've still got a black front VW badge for a Mk1 which I bought and then decided not to put on the car, no point giving them another badge to steal. Funny the badge has lasted over 22 years longer than the car in question.tickious said:
I had a debadged Orion Ghia i. That shocked a few XR3's back in the day
Not hard, MK3 Escorts were nasty little cars. Back in the 80's my lightly tweaked Skoda Estelle shocked an XR3i in Norwich without even trying. Just me in the Skoda pulling away at "normal" pace against four completely aghast looking baseball caps in the tyre-squealing Ford. In fact it was only the squealing tyres that brought my attention to them. Thanks to an engine in the right place the Skoda could do standing starts like that all day; until it needed a new clutch anyhow
Three passengers couldn't have helped.

I had a jetta gt special back in 86 ,I think it was one of 40 built by GTI Engineering but sold through VAG dealers it was a real head turner back in the day but can't find any photos to post!
The one you refer to i belive is this there were 50 made and very few left sold through the VW dealers yours may still be about take a look hereIve now owned this one for the last 3 Years admitadly its a little more modern than the standard 86 The engine gave out after 200000 miles I bought it with the intenton of restoring it but due to the extent of the damage i decided to give it a little more BHP.
Prior to the engine giving up it was a lovely car to drive smooth and a real head turner i agree the Jettas lines dont do it for everyone but it was a cracking alternative price wise to its little brother the Golf.
With the VR6 engine its something else and i grin everytime i drive it.

Back in 1989 I had a GTi engineering RE 1900 16V as my company car! I ordered it through Castles of Leicester with the RE 1900 conversion as a VAG approved extra. Back then GTi engineering were a VAG main dealer and for three years they serviced it.
It was an interesting car, the conversion put out 160 bhp so it was much quicker than my previous standard 16V. A lack of ABS made it an interesting car in the wet. I can't remember it exactly but the reg was Gxxx XTC. When I had it, it was registered A3 GFS. I would love to know if it still exists.

16V RE1900 Conversion.
The RE1900-16V conversion provides enormous gains in low speed torque as well as an increase in top-end performance giving it a broader appeal than the PLUS-PAC
The conversion comprises:
Cylinder block bored and plateau honed to 83.5mm,
Alloy pistons with valve clearance cut-outs,
Gasflowed cylinder head,
Re-profiled inlet and exhaust valve throats,
Gasflowed inlet and exhaust manifold,
Selected valve springs,
Modified injection system.
The car was colour coded white with a full BBS body kit and Ronal Audi Quattro style 15" wheels. I did 115,000 trouble free miles in three years and changed it in for a VR6 in 1992.The RE1900-16V conversion provides enormous gains in low speed torque as well as an increase in top-end performance giving it a broader appeal than the PLUS-PAC
