The Audi TT Diesel
Discussion
For me, the key factor of a performance car is the engine. This is what differentiates sporty cars from the more ordinary stuff.
So what is the point of a TT diesel?
Would it not make more sense to have the same engine in a more practical Golf/Leon/Octavia/Passat/Exeo alternative?
Someone please explain the appeal of the TT diesel to me.

To the purist it doesn't make sense, but to your typical Audi TT buyer I doubt they could care less about the shape of the power curve or the noise it makes at full chat. To them, the combination of 50mpg and low tax in a trendy sports car is too good to be true, hence why they are selling so well.

Is it all about the looks/style then?
Or do they drive better than the hatch alternatives, handling etc?
Not trolling, genuinely interested.
The whole car is about looks/style, whichever engine it has. It certainly looks great, but a sportscar it isn't. It's a squashed hot hatch.Or do they drive better than the hatch alternatives, handling etc?

Since when was the TT a 'performance car'? So what is the point of a TT diesel?
I always thought it was the trendy Golf/A3/Leon/Octavia model that had swoopy bodywork and no back doors. Or am I missing something?

???? It's not a sportscar but handles better than all the other VAG alternatives you mention, interior is a much nicer place to be and the 4wd is enough to deal with wintry mornings.
I don't have kids so why should I get a golf? BMW diesel that I have handles a bit better but the 3series equivalent power costs more than the TT and isn't as nice looking.
But I agree that White ones with the obligatory 19" rs copies are a bit OTT. I like our black one with the TT only 18" 'propeller' wheels.

I know that the PH critics often ridicule the TT, but the first one with its 225hp engine, good turn of speed, and tidy handling is certainly a performance car in my book.
True, it was at the upper end of the engine scale, but IIRC the Audi A3 range had the same 225hp engine within it's range. It does have some fast derivatives, just not sure I agree with you about the TT being a 'performance car'.

The point of the TT diesel is for it to sell to people with different priorities to you. So what is the point of a TT diesel?
