The Audi TT Diesel

Is this true though?
Or is it just about the looks?
Well... Can't speak for the diesel but mine is the fwd 2.0t so basically a golf gti drivetrain but the car is lighter, wheels wider, seat position lower, centre of gravity lower and the front half of the car is aluminium to help reduce understeer - and after test drives in a gti, seat leon, A3, astra vxr I felt the TT was the best handling and best looking. Or is it just about the looks?
Leon was most practical, vxr the most raw and the golf was the closest. Why does the golf gti get such a high praise but the TT is laughed at?
Parents jealous that if you had the choice you would chose the TT over a hatchback? Confused?!
But it is not a sportscar!!
i have one sitting on the drive.
its my Dad's company car, when given a list of cars to choose from, you have to consider fuel costs (at the moment, his fuel allowance doesent cover the rise in fuel prices. So diesal for price and economy makes sence) to be in a car most of the day would you want to be in your ordinary rep mobile or something different were when the mood fancys, a quick blast down a B road with decent handling. Its by no means fast but then again its no slouch, its got a suprising amount of space in the boot, fairly practicle and suprisingly really comfortable (i prefer to hit a pot hole in this rather than my hatchback).
Just to add he was given some bonus by his company for getting a low emisions car which covered the cost of rental for a year

Did you consider the TDi yourself?
Not at the time last year, it's my g/f daily car as I've got a 318d for a CC so didn't want another diesel as she does far less miles than me.But now I've changed jobs and without a CC I think the replacement will be the diesel TT - the g/f now wants a 4x4 for the weeks of snow (we're north Scotland) but most 4x4s are too big and heavy on fuel.
I'm hopefully getting a biggish bike soon so no need for a fastish car!

Keeping up with the Joneses whilst still having something on the company car list.
No, I don't see the point in it either.
Ironic considering the car in your profile. No, I don't see the point in it either.
It is a car pretty much designed for the company car market, which after all is about 75% of all new car sales.Naughty manufacturer for making something that might sell.
I know i'm late to the party here but surely they make the diesel TT because they do the same engines in all the other cars that the TT is based on so it probably cost them very little extra to do the TT as a diesel. As someone mentioned earlier, they have sold very well, one might assume Audi did their research before deciding to build and sell it
Diesel TT owner here...
I was given a company car two years ago (not the TT), and at the time my financee, now wife, and I both had a car each. With no need for three cars between us we decided to chop our own cars in for one.
I was taken by the shape of the Mk2 TT when it was released, and at first had reservations about the diesel in a sporty coupe. Went for a test drive and it seemed to tick all the boxes, low running costs (fuel, tax and insurance), looks good and has decent performance (0-60 in about 7s, quattro etc).
Now we've had it for 18 months and unless circumstances dictate otherwise won't be looking to change it anytime soon.

Recently got a 18 month old black TT tdi roadster which my missus uses as a daily (110mile a day) car, get 42-46mpg without taking it steady, its well put together, lovely inside with the nav and bose etc etc, it handles ok(understeers as per most audi's) but can be hustled along nicely once you re adjust to the lack of available revs(gets to an indicated 140+ easily), is a fun car on the weekend for a drive to the coast etc whilst using feck all fuel to do it! Once warm I can genuiely barely tell its a diesel, the CR unit is very good. Also 4x4 for crappy winter weather too. £120 car tax, It basically ticks all boxes that we wanted.
Downside is i miss the Maser v8 soundtrack etc and its only a 2 seater but there are only 2 of us anyway.
Going to be re mapped along with a dpf bypass pipe in the next few months.
Just got fed up with being taxed so much!

For me, the key factor of a performance car is the engine. This is what differentiates sporty cars from the more ordinary stuff.
So what is the point of a TT diesel?
Would it not make more sense to have the same engine in a more practical Golf/Leon/Octavia/Passat/Exeo alternative?
Someone please explain the appeal of the TT diesel to me.
It just looks better than the others. I see your point and i once thought like this until i needed a second economical car. What i have is a Polo but the above would be much more appealing to drive i would have thought. So what is the point of a TT diesel?

Audi make them as people want them, people want them as it suits them, I see it as less of a compromise than an M3 or RS4 convertible.
A lot of company car policies are diesel only now, I am sure most prospective TT owners would go for the TTRS as a rule but reality dictates compromise, so they go for the diesel.
