+1. Honda is not doing itself any favours with it's current line-up.

Indeed - it's been an absolute tragedy watching Honda slowly throw all that good work and good will out the window and revert back to being a old farts manufacturer.
Couldn't agree more.

Excellent shedding - at last something really different. Even if it hasn't got all it's horses it will be the most automotive fun you can have for a grand (and you will still get the family in too).

I had one of these as a company car when they were first launched and it was fantastic. Far better than the equivalent Impreza which I also considered. Also had a CTR and currently have an S2000. Honda NEED to start making sporty cars again - they're good at it!

Superb car, proper BTCC-style fun can be had for not much outlay these days. The old 'win on Sunday, Sell on Monday adage writ large, only with second-hand BTCC-style cars you might as well add 'resell in ten years' time as well.

As a classic I reckon this genre of cars is actually a fairly safe bet for small amounts of money. Fashion seems to work in 20-year cycles. First ten years, the car gets outclassed by its successors, next ten years, it hits rock bottom as a 'banger' and the numbers thin out. Then after a while, people get rose-tinted nostlagia pangs, revival race series are commissioned and suddenly a car like this looks rather desirable:

People say that a 'proper' sports-saloon 'needs' a big V8 and rear or four wheel drive. Nonsense. The '90s BTCC-inspired saloon specials drove like giant hot-hatches and revved to the heavens, and I absolutely love them.

Great shed.

What is Hondas plan to replace the current Type R engine? Are they going for a 1.6 turbo jobbie?

I went to look at one of these as I had been wanting one for ages. The one I saw seemed a little slow and fairly poor condition so I left it. I still want one as a cheap fun car... everyone, please stop being interested!!

I owned one of these a few years back. I cant believe how much they have depreciated in just a few years. It is very similar in feel to a standard WRX impreza and handles very well. I must stress that the gearbox is very fragile. Honda actually released a recall on them i believe for the 5th gear syncro. I had my 5th gear syncro changed twice in the space of 2 years!!! Apart from that its a great shed!

Christ, I hope not. Honda took the art of N/A to another level when the likes of Toyota and Nissan were just bolting turbos onto ancient engines. If Honda can do it within the strangling EU legislations (that IMO are ruining motoring in general) then they should go for more ground breaking n/a goodness.

i forgot these cars even existed, when they first came out i lusted after one.. Now they are so old and cheap they have passed me by

But for £1000 this is a fantastic find and we all know how reliable a good V-Tec engine is.. BIG THUMS UP, one of the very best SOTW's ever smile

For me, one of the best SOTW's I've ever seen! Exactly what I would be after, if this was more local doubt I'd be able to resist. There's an ITR two roads way from me that I regularily walk past, it's a bit rough. I think "must be worth at least £2,000" when I walk past past it, but dream of something like that turning up on here for half that price, well this is the next best thing!

This is worrying. I'm in the market for a shed due to very low miles pa now and I've also been looking in to these that have become very good value over the past year or two...

From some of the comments here you'd think the seller wanted £3k for it!

The minty ones with history go for around the £3-4K with 90-120K on the clock, they can be expensive to run as the pre 2001 models can only be run on 98 RON which at £1.45 per litre can get expensive. The post 2001 models can be run on the nasty lower octane stuff.

If you factor in all the usual consumables that will need attention plus labour, it can add up to a lot of money if it's not a good example to start with. I do think that these are undervalued and with only 1728 of these cars currently registered with the DVLA* - it won't be too long until there's only a few hundred left.

  • DVLA figures as of Dec 2006 - so probably a lot less now smile
