40 mpg - Check
£6,250 - Check
0-60 - 8 seconds - 2.5 out of 3 not bad.

Cheap to run too.

Does mpg even matter in it's own right? I'm going to suggest it doesn't...

Surely you only have a 0-60 second acceleration requirement and a set amount of money to buy (fund your part of the depreciation curve over the time you plan to own it), maintain, repair, fuel and tax a car over an estimated number of miles each year.

Do the calculations this way and I reckon the car you will end up with could be far more interesting when viewed liked this.
this.

mpg is overratedsmile

Agreed, it is also a flawed measure because so many variables affect the MPG possible at any given time. Driving style will be one of the biggest factors.

0-60 is also a pointless measure of performance for anything but pub bragging. It tells you nothing about how a car feels, how a car responds, how useful a car is for covering ground etc.

A 330d as suggested would fit the criteria but there are cars that will do 60 quicker that could be made to give 40mpg if you really wanted to drive that slowly. To compromise so much and buy a car that will give 40mpg then to thrash it everywhere would be pointless IMO.

A Saxo VTS might do circa the first two, and for a lot less than £6k.

IIRC its on the high end of 8 Seconds frown

I've heard of people buying Fabia VRS' and managing to tune them up to roughly 200BHP? And apparently gives EP3's a run for their money... in a straight line. Think it possible to buy one for £4-5k'ish and spend £1-2k on new turbo, remap, intercooler, exhaust? IDK if it can be done for a realistic £6k though frown

Meeting the high 30s claim would be optimistic. Most stories I've heard are in the 33-36 sort of range. Sits at very high revs on the motorway, I think?

Not quite - they start at 7k. Pretty sure that ropey examples/cat Ds have traded a bit lower, though.

A work colleague has a chipped Skoda Fabia VRS that probably gets close to these requirements, it certainly goes well in a straight line as well as round the twisties!

I'm currently averaging 38mpg in my Clio 172 Cup. It also does 0-60 in 6.9 seconds according to Renault (to be honest, it feels faster than that). Oh and cheapy cheap cheap.

And finally: FUN.

My Corrado VR6 does most of that, only slight fly in the ointment is the mpg. Under normal driving bordering on restrained returns mid 30s..£6k would get you into the best out there

Mid 30s from a Corrado VR6? eek

What kind of driving do you do? None of the owners I know get better than mid 20s. I struggled to get much over 30 out of my 16v.

Good points raised in this thread. Some of the German diesels have horrendous reliability and repair costs. Add this onto your fuel savings and it doesn't look so great.

My mitsi colt CZT is (on paper) 7.2s and can do 40mpg, but not both together smile
I get around 37-38 on average (doing 70 miles per day on motorway and a-roads), low 40s if driving carefully. Paid 8K I think a few years back, so one a few years old should easily be in your price range.

As a lot of suggestions have been a bit out on at least one of the criteria, Merc E320 CDI?
Official figure is about 40mpg combined and 7.4 to 60.

2/3.

40mpg is nowhere near achievable in mixed driving.
