I've been meaning to post this little complaint on PH for quite some time now and tonight is the night. Now, ill admit it may come off as being assinine, dull even, but nevertheless I feel it needs to be heard and I want your experiences as well. It sincerely irks me when I pay the gas attendant cash in advance before fueling up, say I give him 20 dollars for arguments sake, and as the pump nears the end of 20 dollars it slows itself down. With me so far? Why in the world do they preset it to come to a near goddarned halt around $19.60!!!! It takes forever to get to 20 dollars damnit!!! Can't they have it slow down at $19.90 for frigs sake!?!

Before any jumps down my throat about "mr important, mr impatient can't wait 30 seconds more to pump gas" please realize I am being nitpicky, yes I am aware, but seriously I do have a reasonable point can you not agree?

We have no idea what you are talking about, we have to fill up our own cars.

It would be nice to tell the pump how much you want though rather than the drip, drip to round it up.

Yep, gets on my wick when I'm filling up in the US (as does having to pay before dispensing I hasten to add). That said, being able to lock the pump lever and fill hands-free is nice, equilibrium is restored.

What you describe isn't often found in the UK though OP.

Our world would probably have a slightly different experience. Gentle meander up to,say, around 19.90 and then a rush worthy of Posh looking for a photo oppo to the magic figure of 20.01. Consider yourself lucky.

I concur it's stoopid - we moved to the US from the UK in '09............as for the pre-pay.........don't even get me started on trying to get a refund from your cash payment if your car doesn't hold that much petrol!

You also want to try filling a boat with a V8 454 when it clicks off at $100 because it's pay at the pump......oh, joy! Gas is cheap in comparison though!biggrin

Yes, I know what you mean about having to prepay and then walking back to collect your change. Like how the hell am I supposed to know how much it takes to the dollar beforehand!?! I like the auto lock on pumps so u don't have to hold the grimey handle, but many many MANY stations don't have it, its quite annoying!

By the way, here in NY where I reside, gas is now $4.29/gallon for regular!!!

boohoo! It's over £6.27/gallon for petrol here. Americans are so annoying when they complain about fuel.

WOW! That is scary! Is that your boat? If so how many gallons does it hold, to be fair, it must be a really big boat!

I was reading in car and driver, or maybe Automobile, they put a Mercedes Benz SLS AMG against a Cigarette Racing Team AMG 46'Rider XP competition cigar styled speed boat. Its is from Automobile magazine April 2011 copy. Get this, the boat holds 304 gallons of fuel and gets 1.3 mpg at 4000 RPM, 91 octane, but it also states a fuel range of 400 miles also at 4000 RPM. That's some seriously bad fuel mileage hahaha

The "!!!" at the end of the statement kind of inferred it.

Had to fill up in the us a few times this week. First one, you could pay at the pump only with a zip code, the next one took ages trying to figure out why it wasnt working. Guy in the shop said to flip the lever. Next couple of minutes trying to locate the frickin lever by which time the machine decided to reject my card, so back in to the shop to magically predict how much i needed, then back in again to get my change.

And why are us speed limits so low. Every corner has a reduced limit, saw one of 15mpg. Still i did find a nice long tunnel which always seemed to be the way we needed to go.

Brimming the tank of a rental car in the US before you hand it back is particularly (fking) difficult at one of these prepay gas stations, IME.

Is there an invention that you slip under the fuel trigger that holds it on?

I've often thought this. And why do women always struggle to get the cap off? And don't people realise they don't have to park the side nearest the filler? (unless in a 4x4 or van)

Standard fitment on pumps in the US, UAE and a few others. not allowed in the UK.

I sometimes struggle with the cap on the OHs E class - too far recessed and too small to be able to get a good grip on it, and the build up of pressure in the fuel tank seems to force the cap against its seals increasing the friction that needs to be overcome. In contrast, the cap on my S Type barely requires any effort - there's no question about it making a secure seal, but it manages to do so without going out of its way to annoy you each time you pull up at the pump.

As for picking a side, it also depends on the hose arrangement (fixed length hanging down from a gantry, extendible from a drum at the base of the pump etc) and how that corresponds to the location of the filler on your car. Not saying every combination of pump and vehicle causes a problem, but it's certainly more than just the obvious ones you mention.
