Anyone done this job themselves? I want to know what has to be removed to gain access. Presume exhaust system and turbo heat shields and HT coil heat shields are removed but the front coils/plugs still look a nightmare to access what else needs to be removed. Thanks.

Engine in job but not an easy one to do.

Save your knuckles and temper and let someone who has done it before have the hassle! biglaugh

I have the exhaust off to fit a Kline innovation sports system so it would make sense to do it as the car is 6 years old but its only done 11k miles. The plugs should be good for another 30k miles but be nice to do it if access not too difficult and not risking breaking something else.

Recently had my car serviced and they had a 997 GT2 up on the ramps- they said that the spark plug change was an engine out job- which is not the case for the NA models. I'm guessing the turbo's architecture at the back is very similar to the GT2 (smaller turbos, a few other minor details?), so spark plugs would also be engine out unless you have the hands of a 10 year old or something.

Procedure must be completely different to 996 turbo if they need to remove engine. For 996 it's a case of removing rear bumper, intercoolers, a few heat shields and coil packs.
Do they really whip motor out at every major service?

The car will be due a belt change at 6 years old too. Might as well do it all in one go.

Good idea to investigate other pieces of preventative maintenance that can be done whilst you are in there, ie ,defo plugs at 6 years, poss even coil packs, and belts. I was going to do the plugs on my 996 C4S, but as already stated, was so much of a faff that I paid an indy to do it for me, and glad I did.

Sorry guys, this is poor show. I know that the replies are well meaning but I asked a specific technical question. I simply what to know what has to be removed to gain access to effect a spark plug change on my car? So far no one has given any answer to my question.

Hi its bumper off, intercoolers removed, lower engine about 4 inches to allow coil packs to squeeze past chassis leg, heatshields just drop them down away from coils, then remove coils and change plugs.

Did mine on the 996T, took a good 8 hours but I was being very careful throughout. Just take your time and replace any cracked coilpacks whilst you are in there.
