997.2 Exhaust Upgrades - Analysis/Options
Discussion

Im still learning about these cars, but does this seem logical:
Try a gundo hack,
if you dont like it, its only cost a few hundred pounds, then buy the exhaust you fancied instead?
The only downside to this is that it is totally irreversible if you need/want to go back to standard. Back when the 997.2 was first launched, it wasn't an issue; good, second-hand, standard silencers frequently appeared on eBay (mostly off cars that had been upgraded to PSE) so it was cheap and easy to go back to 'stock' (as the Americans like to say). Several years on, those standard cans are a lot more rare.Try a gundo hack,

Going the bypass route is totally, invisibly reversible. Swapping your standard silencers for Gert Carnewal's internally-modded side silencers is also a completely invisible mod, unless the dealer literally cuts them open. Both a better way to experiment IMHO.
My 997.2 S manual has had the PSE retrofitted but without the switch and associated vacuum actuator which means it is ON all the time. I think it sounds great and I doubt anyone would really want anything louder! However, I concede that the standard (switchable) PSE switches the loud setting off over the mid rev range (for noice regulations in Switzerland!) so this may account for the mellow sensation over that range. My suggestion is install the PSE without the switch / actuator or disconnect the actuator wiring. Simples
No real change in noise volume, unlike the Gen 1.
Given it is very easy to fit in comparison to changing the backbox, i think i'll order the Sharkwerks Centre Pipes - as Ian recommends - because they make the best case.

Wonder if we could get a group buy going?

Cool. Well i've spoken to Sharkwerks and the UK distributor is Regal Automotive. It's not listed on their website so i'll give them a call and see what the minimum is for a group buy discount.
If anyone's a member of other forums, see if you can spread the news

have you looked at some of the custom exhaust fabricators?
I am a big fan of Steve at Viper Exhausts in Billericay in Essex. he used to work at a few race team as well as Mercedes and used to make up all the full systems .
I needed some silencers and piping for my mk2 GT3 996 when I bought it as the previous owner had removed the OEM silencers. it was hideously noisy and very lumpy on tick over/low down. back pressure lost too. it was some cup car pipe that replaces the silencers.
looked like this:
had some grade 304 silencers and piping made up:
mounting all sorted and made from scratch:
finished:
I have to say once it was run in and coked up the GT3 sound and smell is back. far better back pressure too so it runs like it should and much better pick up on low revs.
the EML light does not come on any more as the car was overfuelling massively before.
noise wise its very acceptable on tick over, it can now get on track at around 98 DBs but it still has that sporty/throaty sound to it over the OEM GT3 exhaust.
the system has a lifetime warranty, I can pop back at any time for check ups and the price..it was about one third of some of the branded stuff! I know its not OEM but the car is 10 years old now and way past the warranty worry.
a lot of the stuff you can buy made up is ok but he does fix a lot of the aforementioned exhausts as they use a lower grade steel and not 2mm thick.
your call but just an option/thought for you.

Emailed Alex and he indicated that there wasn't a discount to be had, so have ordered direct. Will keep you updated!
Not fitting it myself, I am having it sent to Paragon and they will do it for me
Looking forward to hearing the difference!
Do you mind confirming how much you have paid for the pipe and for fitting via Paragon? Who have you ordered directly from? Not fitting it myself, I am having it sent to Paragon and they will do it for me
