I thought this was a manual ?? And the stunt drivers hated it, as it had too much grip !

I suppose it's appropriate that it's come onto the market just after "Steed" has died. I think the rear spoiler was added part way through filming as I'm sure it didn't always have one, but shots do show it in some episodes. It was always an auto as far as I can remember, although it may have had a dubbed soundtrack.

The funny thing is, if some young kid got hold of an XJC today and slapped a "Barry" wide-body kit on it, complete with a big spoiler on the boot and then fitted mega wide alloys, there'd be an outcry about ruining a classic car.

But the exact same thing done "back in the day", is rated as a cool car!

How fickle the classic car World is!

Not really, as you say, this was done back in the day to what was effectively a new (or virtually new) car, and done by the firm that was building the 'factory' race XJC's, so yeah, 40 years later, it's a cool classic car with terrific history smile

I seem to recall the f/glass arch kits to make 'replicas' were available from quite a few 'speed shops' afterwards in the late 70's - I remember the adverts in CCC and Hot Car etc.

Given it's history I wouldn't be surprised if it went for double the estimate.

Anyone care to guess ?

I've been facinated about this thread since it was first posted, and the utter silence that has been evident for over a month. I can only assume that 'everyone' fancies a go at it!

As a petrolhead that grew up in the 70's, it must rank around third in everyones wish list behind Bonds DB5 and Lord Bretts DBS? So I reckon the estimate will be blitzed...

A certain radio DJ has been playing the New Avengers theme all week as well... Scare tactics?

I had no idea the original Steed Jag still existed, but I've seen a first rate replica a few times.

I woke last night wondering when the auction is/was, thinking that maybe I should try and buy this beast. I covered the European Touring Car championship that year, 1977, and saw every race and was even at Zolder when the team was given the bad news that the programme was over and that they should bring the cars home rather than go to the next race at Estoril.

I particularly remember the moment that Ralph Broad realised at Monza that they were in trouble with the oil system. He had borrowed the press Alfetta that I was using for a lap of the track and going into the first chicane, he counted the seconds he was on the brakes. "F***ing Ada (whoever she was), where's the oil going to be after eight seconds on the brakes?" he exclaimed in genuine alarm. The same experiment took place at the second chicane with the same result.

On returning to the pits, he immediately had baffles made up but it was a problem for the rest of the championship. I remember a big 12-cylinder block sitting on its end in the Nurburgring paddock when they were literally building engines on site. Ironically they scored their best result there with a second place.

I don't think Steed or I would ever have the same problem with the road car but it just seemed like a nice idea in the middle of the night. However, it sounds like it might go for mega-bucks, so, as they say in the Den, I'm out.

Racing XJC must have had at least an 150bhp advantage over the opposition, although a bit(!) heavier. Snetterton straight would have been an adventure.

That's a fair estimate. Have just had a look at the H&H listing, they do have a good selection of cars which will bring in a wide range of punters. XJC bid opening at £6k.

Wow........didn't expect that much!

Hope it's just sympathetically recommissioned rather than full on restored removing all that lovely patina.
