Hi folks, this is my first contribution to the forum and obviously i want to go straight for a TOTD!! I have been thinking about this one for a while. I have been travelling a lot more with work recently and have started to notice a lot more personalised registration plates out there. My latest observation being that surely now there are plates out there worth more than the vehicles that they are displayed on, especially the date-less plates!! Unfortunately i haven't been able to get a stationary photo yet but have the perfect photo to get next time i visit Wales (secret spot!). Anyway, comments and photos are welcome...is it just me that thinks this or do you have any sheds sporting a £3k plate? Thanks. Alastair

They're all over the place round here. 3 letter plates on a tired 2001 focus etc. I think its toffs that have trying to fly under the radar, but we know. We all know.

My mate has something that his grandad bought/had back in the 1960s and whilst he's been offered a lot of money for it, he would rather enjoy the sentimental value of it, even though its just stuck on the back of a 1999 Vauxhall Omega

A friend of a friend has exactly this.

His Dad died and he had a plate worth (apparently) around £4k and his son put it on his car after he passed away. It is a shame that his car was a 10 year old 206 worth probably £1500 at best.

That is not a bad ratio at almost 4 x the value of the car!!

Possibly, they probably weren't anywhere near as much money, relative to their cars value, when the people bought them 20 years ago?

But, they still use them for each replacement car, as it helps them to remember their number plate when parking.

I have only just recently moved this shed on, £400 car and kept the numberplate which is of unknown value at the moment, but should be more than the car. Should fit nicely on the new V90 model.

I regularly see an elderly farmer ( I presume) driving the most broken looking Daihatsu 4x4 in my village.

his reg no is 70 RD which to me, looks like LORD. obviously he's not a moron so its spaced properly. Bu to my PH eye, it says LORD !

I wouldn't mind betting that plate is worth serious money. Equally, as is the way with country types, so could he be too.

I also used to walk past a landrover with the plate AK 1 on my way to school, some 30 odd years ago. Ironically my exact initials. To be fair it was brand new and the chap renewed it with a new one every year or so. Again, it'll be worth mega money, but of course in fairness it was always on a new car, which isn't the point of this thread !

My folks have a matching set of double-double plates, which were both on modest 15 year old cars until recently. Total car value, maybe £4k tops. Total plate value, maybe £10-15k if sold as a pair.

Do other countries have this weird number plate fixation in the same way we do? People paying tens of thousands for a few numbers and letters that look vaguely like something? Or is this a British only thing?

Some scary plate values out there...especially as the insurance companies aren't quick to return them if the vehicle is stolen! My friends dad has about 6 plates and his most valuable took him nearly 1 year to reclaim after the car got stolen...bit of a worry when you have a 10k plate!

I can understand it on a car that was perhaps bought new and for a hefty price, a late 90s Merc or something similar. Then you'd expect the plate to have gone on then and been left there.

Other cars I don't quite get like you're average hatch back worth a grand with a plate worth double but then there's a story behind many of them I'm sure. May be that the plate was inherited or gifted.

A family friend drives an E46 BMW convertible which wouldn't be worth an awful lot. But has a plate with something like 13 U on it. This was her late husband's plate and he had it in the 80s on a 911. Passed away and she's had it on her cars ever since. Can see why she wouldn't sell it and put it on whatever car she had.

Whoopee do, doesn't everyone have a set of matching plates, one for front one for the back haha.

There is an old Rover 400 near me that has a 3 digit number plate which must be worth considerably more than the car.
