718 CS - Rattly Sound at 2k Revs

As per the title.

718 CS manual, 1 month old, 700 miles.

Gently accelerating, once I reach exactly 2k revs, theres a metallic rattly sound. It lasts about 1 second, whether I keep gently accelerating or keep the revs at 2k.

The sound has been there from the start, so its not a new sound.

I can't quite tell where the sound is coming from, engine or gearbox. Don't think it's the exhaust.

Anybody have similar? Not sure if it's a problem and something I should contact OPC about or not ...

The one I had on loan had something similar as I recall. It was a bit like diesel knock.

So no other 718 owner has said they have the same.

Mmm. Another long drive yesterday. It doesn't seem to be changing/lessening as the engine beds in.

It's enough for me to contact the OPC over. It does not seem right.

I wasn't being snarky when I said the one I had on loan had a clatter about it. I cannot recall exactly at what point in the rev range it was, but it was there.

same here.

i test drove a base model and an S though it was quite a while ago now so can't remember exactly but i do remember noticing a rattle lower in the rev range.

Exhaust heat shield maybe they tend to rust away and flap and resonate

ok no so rust on a new car, bolt maybe

I guess it's a "feature" then, and not a problem.

Does sound like a resonance which kicks in at exactly the level of vibration reached at 2k revs. Hoped it wasn't something loose, which would be disappointing in a top-end build like a Porsche, but if others have encountered the same thing then I'm satisfied it's not an issue with my car in particular.

I test drove one finally a few weeks ago. No rattle, as I recall but again I was gentle. My current daily is also 2.0 Turbo 4 pot, wanted to see the mid-engine difference. Definitely different engine sound and fast but don't remember any rattle.

I've had the 'rttle' 'shudder' in a 718CS PDK - It reminded me of older cars with less power/torque when the revs dropped to the point of the car almost stalling if you did not change down a gear. Not very nice TBH.

Does it happen at exactly 2k revs?

That theory would indicate the rpms are high enough for the fuel to be shut off but not high enough for fuel input to stop the engine from stalling. I find it hard to believe that in this day and age a quality manufacturer could put to market a product with under-developed engine mapping. Not impossible though especially in a climate where reducing fuel consumption to the absolute minimum is a key driver.

It sounds like something loose that gets excited by the 2000rpm engine, could be a number of things, and maybe something just not tightened up correctly. I would definitely be on to the OPC, if they try the "they all do that sir" line them get them to show you in a demonstrator. It's not something that any of the reviews I've read have mentioned so I can think it's a 'feature'.

I've not noticed it in 6 months of ownership (Manual S). Occasionally if I am being a bit sloppy I accidentally put it in 3rd not 1st and try and pull away, it groans a bit at that which is fair enough

Four and half months with my 718 Boxster PDK and no 2k rattle so far.
Still running it in so a lot of time in the 2000 rev range. BTW the 2.0T noise issue has not been a problem for me either.

Did you get this sorted by Porsche? My cayman gts is doing this at 2000k woundering if there is a fix / or what is causing the noise?

I had something similar on my 981 and it was internal trim rattling against the aluminium cross bar. The OPC tech stripped the rear of the car down and added cushioning tape everywhere. It seemed to cure it.

I also have, in cold weather only, what sounds like the hatch rattling at similar revs which goes away once the engine is war,. I've not sorted that one yet as it's a bit intermittent.
