Hi chaps, I'm in the market for a 981 Boxster S PDK. Budget is just over £30k but I've been struggling to find a nice car for the money. I've come across the following private sale and would appreciate your views on it as you guys know the market better than me.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

Price looks a little high to me, but private sales don't seem to be much cheaper than dealers bizarrely. Is it missing any major options? I would like the sports exhaust but most in my budget don't seem to have it specced. I could look into getting it retrofitted at some point.

Many thanks

The only things I would have added would be sports exhaust and DAB.

Many people like the look of the 20" wheels, but the car rides noticeably better on the standard 19" wheels. If you are keen on 20" wheels I'd be looking for a car with PASM, to restore a better ride.

Someone saying they would pay £32k for that car on the thread below. Think it's the same car.

That car will have cost about £55,000 new in 2012 so at £34,000 has apparently depreciated only 38% in five years. Given that most cars depreciate around 15% a year you can judge the asking price for yourself.

Mind you, 981S is a brilliant car! driving

Totally irrelevant!

Agree with this. I've had my 2013 Boxster S for about 3 months now, and I would say PASM with 20's is a necessity for me. Not everyone will agree, so suggest you drive one first to decide.

The other important option for me was electric seats. Not easy to find, but I couldn't get a really comfortable driving position in my 987.2 as the squab on the manual seats couldn't be tilted.

...plus extendable thigh support with electric seats (and very useful "get out of the way" steering column).

I have elec seats and PASM but non-PASM and 20s is better than my TTS with 19s and mag ride (in normal mode). What are you used to?

Thanks for the insights chaps. I think I may give that car a miss as i think I'd ideally want PASM with the 20s.

I was searching autotrader earlier and thought I'd see if there were any decent 981 Cayman S for sale that might fit the brief instead. I was slightly shocked that prices are so high! It seems £38k gets you in to a 2013 car, but the higher specced 2013 cars are low £40k! This one stood out but look at the price!

I would've thought prices would be lower given the newer 718 but perhaps the value or 981 cars are artificially higher due to them being the last of the 6cy engines? But still seems a lot for a 4 year old car and no warranty.

You do know that the Cayman you linked in the advert also hasn't got PASM? For reference I have the X73 sports suspension and I find it fine on my daily driver. As someone else mentioned, it depends what your expectations are.

I think that original car looks decent for the money. At £30k you are right at the low end of 981S prices, here you have a pretty low mileage with a decent enough spec. I suspect prices will only harden over the next couple of months.

Many people seem to think 20s with no PASM is fine, so that may not be an issue. If you like Agate (I don't) then I doubt you will do much better than this.

I have 20 inch wheels on my 981s without PASM and the ride is perfectly acceptable, in fact its one of the things that passengers comment on (apart from the noise, the looks, the go etc!). I also think the original car at the start of the thread looks decent value, having some Porsche warranty is always a nice bonus on cars as complex as this.

So I managed to get a test drive on a car today with 20s and no PASM. To be fair I found the ride more than acceptable and don't think I'd mind not having PASM so that opens up more options.

But one thing that was confirmed for me after driving the car today is that it must have the sports exhaust. The car today didn't have pse and it just didn't hit the spot for me - definitely need the extra noise of pse to give me the feeling I'm after.

You can have it added if you found the right car without PSE.

Good advice, as cars with PSE seem to be hard to find when you're ready to pull the trigger...

Its a fairly big job, and should cost about £2k all in.
