The top gear “mild sports” exhaust I fitted to my 1999 Carrera was awful - god knows why people like them TBH

The Danske that was on it sounded far nicer but sadly the welds failed

So what I'm struggling with, is what exhaust options do I have that are close to stock sound levels?

Everything I seem to find is, well, aimed at being loud, or a double the price switchable system.

I agree, dansk is a much better sounding exhaust imo. I got some flexis welded in, was pretty cheap. I've got a switchable system as t the moment but am planning to move it on as I just keep it in quiet mode!

These ad reads well I think

Couple of very small niggles but lots of stuff done. Sounds like most stuff done recently was DIY which doesn't necessarily bother me but may some buyers.

That looks fabulous… but I would say that as it’s almost identical to mine biggrin

Looks to have had all the work done you’d want… just need to check for rust in the usual places.

Only a couple of very minor changes for me… the exhaust tips are wrong and it needs a three spoke wheel. I also prefer clear indicators as I think the front looks cleaner with them, but I know others like the ambers…. Overall I think it’s pretty much perfect.

Looks like a darker section of paint on the door, could be indicative of front and rear end respray. Could also just be the light, but it looks a lot like mine which has has repair work in the past.

Ugliest of jobs this one. A/C evaporator had failed, which means the HVAC box had to come out to replace it.

Excellent work! Not sure I'd have the patience for that job!

What's your garage set up like? Looks like it's well appointed.
It's a half decent setup . Room for 3 cars, few motorbikes, 2-post lift, couple of work benches and cabinets with roller drawers etc. 2-post lift is a game changer for most of the work I do on my cars. Still, I'd like a bigger garage biggrin
Sounds ace. A 2 post lift is on my wish list but I don't really have the height for one to be fully effective.

The designTek rear boxes from Design911 are really good. Well priced, and give a slightly deeper tone to the standard OE ones. Importantly, they don’t drone at all

I don’t think a 25 year old 996 which hasn’t had some sort of cosmetic paintwork exists.

I have never seen a silver car which doesn't have some weird differences like these.

Ha, that's easy. 3 x torx 20 screws. You just need to gently prise off the round vent (to get to the 3rd screw) and disconnect the temp sensor then it slides out.
Thanks - i'm going to try this later today. Hopefully I won't break a vent!

Got back from a fantastic overnight to Mallaig with a few pals. Came off the ferry to complete the last two miles home and suddenly a bit of noise from the steering - hopefully just a tie road and the car is booked in the indie for the rear coffin arms anyway

At least it happened right at the end of the journey and doesn’t impact my daily use biggrin
Are you still using K&L? I was trying to get hold of him a while ago but he seemed to be closed. Noticed it opened when passing a few times since.

I did the front scuttle with GTechniq G4 today - what a difference it makes! Really freshens the car up and makes it look newer

Before and after (the wipers were done with it on the previous bottle, as were the black wing mirror mounts)

What a difference…!

You’ve saved us all from experimenting with other products, now you’ve shown the G4 works…thanks..!
I’ve just done a detail on the old X5 I have here in Spain.

Wash, clay, wash + turtle wax hybrid ceramic stuff (more on that at the end).

Despite the car being in pretty good shape, the plastic and rubber was looking tired… 300 days of sunshine and summer temps in the high 30’s don’t do them much good. Used this product on them today.

Very impressed with the results.. though we’ll see how long it lasts.

Before

After

I did all the plastic trim, rubber seals and the wiper arms and have half the pack left… though I’d also previously used some to restore the plastic bits in my 10 year old bbq!

Will be ordering some for the 996 next time I’m back in the Uk.

The turtle wax hybrid ceramic stuff is also very good… though not quite the spray on and wipe off in any conditions they claim. Needs a very fine mist, wipe with a damp microfibre, then a final run over with a dry microfibre. End result is as smooth as glass!!

5 years younger, a third of the mileage, nowhere near as much fun to drive or as pretty, but serves a purpose.

I did the black plastic trim on my 205 GTi with Wurth Plastic Dye. The trims were in a pretty bad state after 30 years and the front bumper was actually a light grey one off a phase 1.

I did 2 coats of it and so far it's lasted 4 years without having to re-do.

Fixed my Frank not opening issue. Not quite sure what I did as I hadn't even taken the trims off around the release, lifted the lever and up she popped. Love a self healing car laugh

Given all of the cable and latch a good lube and hopefully it won't happen again.

Being a later 996.1 mine has the electric release. When the latch on mine went a few years ago there was about a month where it was intermittent. It worked fine when it was cold but if the car was sat in the sun the frunk just wouldn't pop up when released.

I wonder how much similarity there is in the mechanism as it wasn't the electrical part/actuator that failed in mine. It was the mechanical part of the release that started to stick and not release.

The Designtek boxes are TopGear boxes. The Mild Sports Sound boxes.

Well they used to be, not sure if they still are, but presume they are.

I agree, slighter deeper sound and no drone.

It seems strange some said they got drone using Top Gear mild sound back boxes.

Finally put it back together after winter hibernation. Need to get it booked in for an MOT before the summer is over... might even treat it to a wash.
