Happy to report that after 16 days of standing outside in Scottish temperatures, the 996.1 started first turn of the key this morning. Quick run & no issues, these really are well built cars.

Dropped the 996 off for it's re-spray this morning, noticed something about the radio reception whilst on the way there.

I use this to hold my iPhone so that I can use the sat-nav, charging the phone at the same time:

What I noticed was this - set off, radio reception was (for once) fine. Got to roughly Woking and noticed that my phone wasn't charging.

Pushed the charger deeper into the cigarette lighter socket - lightning bolt icon appeared on phone, and at exactly the same time the radio reception went to sh*t.

Experimented by pulling the cable out of the phone but leaving the charger fully in the socket - radio reception immediately better again.

Now I didn't have a chance to fully test this, but from what little time I did have (Woking to Chobham) was quite compelling.

So I may have changed the antenna amplifier and made Precision chase around the car for a fault that was actually in the phone charger - plus purchasing a replacement stereo to use whilst the Becker was "fixed":

I am feeling (potentially) a little silly at this point.

Still, c'est la vie.

Still on the topic of electronics - I find myself wondering quite how much performance is being left on the table (as it were) on the now 20 year old 3.4 litre cars, with their 20 year old engine ECU (or DME in Porsche)?

A Porsche and a queue of patient single women maybe?
laugh

If you're lucky it will be in hibernation mode. Depends on how old/state of your battery. If possible (own garage) leave the trunk open to have access to the battery.
I've started leaving my car unlocked. Will this save the battery?

Not in my experience, used to leave mine unlocked in the (locked!) garage, still only lasted a couple of weeks in the winter.

I leave mine unlocked in the garage as well, and my battery only lasts a few weeks. It's a good excuse to use the car though biggrin

Is that a VDO / Continental radio? I fitted one of those in a Golf IV GTI I briefly owned and was rather pleased with it.
They feel and look OEM and come with DAB+ and Bluetooth. Exactly what I want from a DIN1 radio!

Yep, it’s a Continental from Bergvill FX.

You can get them from ebay.de at a nice price.

I got the pre-built wiring harness adapter and so forth at the same time, happy enough with the price I paid - and the owner of Bergvill FX is on 911uk, so nice to give some business to a fellow enthusiast.

Right - enough of stereo chat, back to ECU.

Does the PH hive-mind think that replacing the 20 year old ECU with a modern unit would bring advantages in terms of in terms of power, torque and overall driveability, or am I making things up again?

You may as well do some engine mods and get a remap. Have you checked the prices of stand alone management? You tend to go this way with heavily modified engines rather than swap one in for another.

That's the plan, hence why I was looking at Syvecs.

Then it occurred to me that there has been a degree of progress in terms of processor power and so forth in the 20 years since my car was new, and that there might be a performance advantage purely in the management side of things.

It's more idle curiosity than anything else, but I'd be interested in the answer.

If you want to know more about Syvecs then talk to Charlie username Vixpy on here.

You can squeeze more power by fiddling with the table values. Unless you are going huge capacity increase or forced induction the standard ECU will do the job.

I'd say it's a modest capacity increase - 3.4 up to 3.7 litres, with some cams ground for the new capacity and some work to the induction and exhaust systems, a modest hike to the rev limit, and if I lose all sense of proportion (and can live with the hit to torque lower down, which I probably shouldn't) potentially some throttle bodies.

it's certainly not as if we're strapping an HX50 to it and running 2 bar, but it's a fair number of detail changes and I'm keen to make the most of them.

Dropped the car at Neinmeister for a check over. They fitted all the tricky suspension and prepped it for track work for a previous owner. So they know the car well.

https://www.ninemeister.com/

Spurred on by this smoking which had just started and is apparently a leaky power steering pipe.

https://youtu.be/THt-X1DGCJc

So I'm having some new power steering pipes, also new clutch fluid pipe, new gear selector cables, some drop links and i think that's it.
