what is an 'early' 3.4 996?
Discussion
Hmmmm, might need to scratch the forged wheels idea after a bit more research...
Although Wheelsbase say they will fit, I can't see it myself... I'm currently running 15mm spacers on an ET65 (so equivalent of ET50). The wheels I'm looking at are ET38, so would require another 12mm.
Might fit stock ride height, but I very much doubt it when the car is lowered without work on the arches & a load of negative camber & probably some tyre stretch.

I’m going to finally bite the bullet and get the AC sorted. I’ve managed without it for 6 years, but the car is unbearable in the current hot weather. I’m hoping this is just new condensers.
I don't know how you've done that! I have concluded I can't cope without a/c now. This rules out some older cars but it's one of the first things I look for now - does it have a/c or can it be retro fitted.I looked at a car at the weekend which needed a "re-gas". Of course, the condensors were shot and despite the venor's claims there were even references to that fact in the paperwork. For three years. If you're going to play dumb about that, what else is hidden away, less obviously.

Now my wife has moved to the Bahamas with work, I can use her Touareg whenever I want - at the moment I'm only using the 996 for running to work and back a couple of days a week (less than 2 miles each way)... just to keep it ticking over.I looked at a car at the weekend which needed a "re-gas". Looks great in that colour with amber indicators and what I think are the 17" twists - the sort of thing I am after, although my search has only just begun. I recognise your ID from my 944 owning days and see that you still have yours. Presumably they feel very very different to each other?James_G said:

Yes I still have a 944 - an S2 track car with ~240k miles. It's a great car & I can't imagine ever selling it.They do share a certain "porsche-ness" in terms of their control weights and mechanical feel. In essence they are just right and quite removed from modern cars.
I retrofitted the ambers - mine came from the factory with clear lights though i believe ambers were std for my99 c2's.
Great cars, although 986S boxsters are even better value if you only need 2 seats and don't mind a ragtop. Glorious engines (unlike the 944 )

I do love these Fuchs wheels. People that have bought them - are you getting genuine Fuchs? Or quality replica ones? Would be good to know some resources as rather than get my existing alloys refurbed some Fuchs would be good. Would be after 18"ferrisbueller said:

Hah, the stone cold* classic "aircon just needs a re-gas", has it ever been true?I looked at a car at the weekend which needed a "re-gas". I agree that (now I'm old) functional A/C does become a requirement, the 996 is I suspect the oldest Porsche that actually has A/C worthy of the name.
- Or not, as the case may be

Very nice - the fronts have a decent dish on them as well, which makes it look better I thinkThings seem to be progressing with the potential purchase of the Zenith C2 I linked a couple of pages back. I'm going to take another look at it with the selling dealer to run through the list of issues flagged by the PPI that Parr did for me. There is a fairly long list of typical age-related 996 issues (all the family favourites !), so it then becomes a question of what the dealer is prepared to swallow within the asking price. Bottom line, as others have stated, this looks every inch the £20k car !!! (but it could be a very nice £20k car !).
One question - I have a set of 987.1 Cayman S PASM shocks, with H&R lowering springs, sitting in my garage. Would these potentially fit a 996 ? I realise that the PASM won't function, but it may be an acceptably cheaper short-term alternative to fitting a full new set of shocks to the 996 immediately. I am already assuming that the 996 shocks will be long past their best, whereas my old Cayman shocks appear to be in decent shape.
thanks,
Jamie

Thanks - we'll see what happens - I need to be prepared to walk away if the dealer won't play ball.
The Cayman shocks are of pretty negligible value, I just thought it might be an idea to try and use them. I can't imagine the spec will be that different to a 911 ? It's more a question of what they would be like as fully passive dampers without the PASM activated.

I went to Brands today to do an evening track day - sadly the event was a 98Db limit and my car decided to test at 102Db.
Who here is using exhaust baffles, and can recommend them? I've read that many use Decibel Devils, is this a good option?
Also, any hints and tips on how to pass the test if on the edge? A little Googling when I got home suggested dipping the clutch and turning the aircon off, is this a real thing, or merely superstition?

Which exhaust have you got? Is it Top Gear (mild)? Or original?Who here is using exhaust baffles, and can recommend them? I've read that many use Decibel Devils, is this a good option?

I dip the clutch for noise test. Could be the real thing, could be superstition!

Standard manifolds, Top Gear 200 cell X-pipe, Cargraphic exhaust. The X-pipe made it *much* louder than it was before at high revs, sounds awesome if you ask me - but a little too awesome for Brands on a Tuesday it seems.
Yeah X-pipe must be the cause.Noise test is a pain for 911s
