what is an 'early' 3.4 996?

This was timely as my sticky ignition key developed into fans not running and other weirdness last week. Ordered from the above link and fitted it this morning, all is well once more
It's a fiddly job but not hard, and the only thing I will mention is that the video guides out there are all made from LHD cars, in which the switch is mounted upside down when compared to UK models. This means that in our cars it's practically speaking impossible to get to the grub screws without removing the side ventilation panel. In my case this was a bonus as it meant that I could also reattach the ventilation flap which hasn't worked for years
I haven't done mine, that's a jubilee bank holiday job

So my friend has a 996.2 - pic below of his with mine. I may of mentioned this before. Now I know this is not a gen 1 and therefore has no business being in this thread. But I wanted to share a little story about it and the owner and his experience and history with the car. This is quite relevant I think to the people here who like these cars, have one already or are thinking of getting one.
So lets start about 3 or 4 years ago. I had my 996 and I was loving it and kept telling him that I love it. After maybe 12 months of listening to me going on and on and on and .... he eventually caved in and decided to buy one. He did the usual car buying thing of trying to find one that he thought was good value. So he bought this one and the reason he gave was that it was in good condition and had been owned by the same guy for many years and he liked the colour scheme. Personally I didnt think it was a great car because it was a gen 2 - obviously - and because I didnt think the list of recent maintenance excited me. But he seemed very pleased with his purchase and I guess that's the most important thing with car buying. We can only give so much advice and sometimes people might not want to listen to it.
At first he enjoyed the car. Then he took it to see a Porsche mechanic he knows well after owning an early Cayenne V8 for 4 or 5 years. The first service included some extras - but cant remember the exact order so lets just say that over the next 2 years he had lots of work done to the car including discs and pads, spark plugs and coils, water pump and belts, rads and ac condensers, some extra ac pipes running along the bottom of the car, brake pipes - rigid and flexis - and finally a clutch. So at this point he was into the car for about 6 or 7 thousand in bills for bits and pieces.
Then we had the lock down and the car went into hibernation away from his home for over 12 months. As we came out of lock down I had been busy buying more Porsches and he was still without his Porsche. He started moaning about it to me, talking about selling it and generally not feeling the love. I persuaded him - or he decided to - go and get the car and spend some time with it before making a decision to keep it or sell it. He kept sending me ads for 997 cars and still generally not feeling the love. I pressed him for some concrete reasons why he didnt like the car and we got down to a little list of niggles which were annoying him -
Seat Rubbish
Some sort of weird diff lash or gearbox problem - coming on and off the throttle while changing gear
Some vibration from the wheels / tyres / drivetrain
Some vagueness in the feel of the car - quote 'not exactly sporty'
So we started trying to work through them one by on. All along the way he kept talking about selling and not wanting to spend too much as he was of the view he should sell it but I kept chipping away.
Long story short - well I will shorten the end - he is now in love with the car. I now get videos form him talking about how the car behaves mid bend, how he can feel the weight transfer coming on and off the throttle going into and coming out of a bend etc etc etc.
If anyone is interested what the cause of his problems were and how they were fixed -
Seat Rubbish - now has 997 seats
Some sort of weird diff lash or gearbox problem - coming on and off the throttle while changing gear - turned out the Dual Mass Flywheel was shot and should have been changed when he had the clutch changed but was missed by his 'trusted' mechanic
Some vibration from the wheels / tyres / drivetrain - replaced all wheels and tyres
Some vagueness in the feel of the car - quote 'not exactly sporty' - the vagueness improved when he changed to correct 996 wheels from 997 wheels - wrong offsets - but the main change was all new arms, bumps stops and tie rods for the front suspension. He didn't want to go mad - financially - so kept the original shocks and springs but basically changed everything else.
When he was at his lowest with the car he was thinking of worse case scenarios being he needed all of the following -
Full Gearbox Rebuild
All new suspension parts
Firmer coil over type dampers and bushes and roll bars etc
Regarding the weight transfer, vagueness issue; my immediate thoughts were engine and or gearbox mounts. It does appear the DMF fixed the issue however in your friends shoes I’d also replace the mounts as they are cheap and will really sharpen the car if it’s still running the original ones So lets start about 3 or 4 years ago. I'm losing some PAS fluid. I want to top it up but don't have the specific fluid. Do I have to buy the bang on correct fluid?
Went to Porsche Solihull this morning to buy some PAS fluid. The place is full of electric cars now. They even have charging points on the forecourt. I didn't see many sports cars - 1 or 2 maybe - they were definitely in the minority. Mainly Cayenne, Panamera and Taycan type cars dotted around outside. Some random stranger even wandered over to compliment Me for bringing in a car with a real engine which made some noise. If anyone here has not tried to top up their PAS I will say you definitely need a funnel of some sort. I tried to put some in outside Porsche and definitely only got maybe 20 - 30% of the fluid coming out of the bottle into the reservoir itself. So I probably made a bit of a mess to their forecourt - Sorry Porsche.

I know I shouldn't get annoyed but it is the little things that annoy you. After doing the engine mounts last summer I decided to change the 4 tires as well to better the ride, the old ones had plenty of treed left on them but they were 10+ years old, Got a damm nail in one over the weekend, sods law.

I got 2
I also bought 1 litre of coolant
Mine went in today to have the chassis sorted… cleaning up, some welding on the chassis legs etc. Guy who’s doing it called me this afternoon to say the main brake line front to rear needs doing and the rear of the sills are rotten.
Car has done 198k now, so probably to be expected.
Once this is done a mate of his is going to sort the front and rear arches.
Had her over 15 years and 140k miles now.

Mine needed that for the MOT a couple of months ago - the one that goes over the gearbox. Turned into a fairly dear MOT...Car has done 198k now, so probably to be expected.

10k a year for 15 years is good going! Has it had an engine rebuild at all?!Car has done 198k now, so probably to be expected.

Will we get any pics to look at Chris?nebpor said:
Excellent - that's a lovely colour!
Indeed. Nothing against other colours but I think the Zenith blue looks absolutely brilliant. I also absolutely love the Turbo wheels from this era 911. They've been freshly refurbished, which is both brilliant and a curse (cleaning *the entire* wheel properly to get that beautiful finish showing through the spokes)
