Temporary Cayman S replacement - suggestions needed
Discussion
I'm VERY reluctantly selling my 987.2 Cayman S. Need to unlock some cash for a new business. Its top spec so should sell pretty quickly.
Anyway, thats not the point. The point is that I need a £10-15k toy to play with in the mean time. Obviously it wont be as good so no point comparing it but shout if you have any reasonable ideas.
Has to be petrol, not too big, nice build quality and shouldn't go bang immediately or frequently. And its got to put a smile on my face as its a weekend toy, not a commuter.
Considering Z4 35i, 135i, S3, merc SL
Cheers!
If / when the new business takes off I'll get a 981 Cayman or Boxter GTS with PDK.

Not exactly the conventional option but have you thought of a Lotus Elise (either S1 or S2)?
If you then sell in spring or summer next year you will probably lose very little and certainly less than any of the mainstream cars.
If you pick up a low mileage S1, then its likely to stay flat or even appreciate ( https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...)
Obviously you need to go in with your eyes open but picking up a coveted car will pay dividends.

These are all brilliant, completely forgot about the elise - always wanted one when I was younger. Cant believe how well they've held thier value too but may be a bit too uncomfortable for weekends away or long drives.
S2000 is a great shout too.
Going to look at a 2009 Z4 35i today. Not exactly the ultimate drivers car but quick enough, decent interior and hardtop roof is a bonus as it won't be garaged...

All revs 'n thunder with no real go I'm afraid.
Z4 ? Hopeless chassis, albeit great for the US market, but definitely not a sports car.
very hard finding a £20k fun car, the S2000 has 50/50 weight balance, one of the best gear shifts also it feels light which is nice and you sit low.Z4 ? Hopeless chassis, albeit great for the US market, but definitely not a sports car.
Also great for holding ££££ now and more sort after, they have even gone up.
Do we need real go, you can buy a E30 318is and it's a hoot to slide about.
with these new laws anything greater than 80mph on a B road now will be instant issues, we need to be buying cars which are fun upto 80 mph now imo.
Speed is getting a big issue now and new cars are too fast, or to easy to go fast so dull, driving cars need to be more fun but slower.
what people love about the old GT3 engine you get in the S2000 lol it all happens up top.
My GT4 is a posers car, my Cayman R way more fun to drive, I am going back to a Elise this summer in fact if I can find one I like just to keep the speeds sub 80mph on B roads and still be smiling.
Z4 is st I agree though :-P
Mx5 has to be in with a shout at £20k for sure.

I came from one of those to a Cayman R.... would heartily recommend as an all rounder but not going to tick the boxes for 2 seater chuckability. That said... spend £12k-£15K & you'd get a very good one & quite likely depreciation free motoring (just get one <70k on the clock & the boot floor has been taken care of.
They're handsome, handsome cars & great fun, bit fat weight wise but you can get kids & suitcases in there as well so can't be touched in practical terms.
I miss mine, but the R is an absolute riot so horses for courses.

I had an S1 as a daily driver way back in 2002 so kind of got use to the compromise. Eventually saw sense and bought a daily driver and the Elise was a weekend driver before upgrading to a S2 111R and then to an Evora. They are very comfortable to drive in (due to the legs out driving position) however the wind noise may get you after a while. However it is something that you get used to.
Would probably say my Boxster Spyder is probably as noisy as the Elise. Never found it an issue as the Elise's/Spyder are weekend special moment cars.
Easiest way to find out is to drive one to see if its a compromise too far.

Find another way of raising the money for your business? The gen 2 Cayman S has very little depreciation. Anything you buy for £15K is likely to depreciate much quicker (except for the gen 1 Cayman S that was mentioned). You'll definitely miss it if you go for any of the replacement options that have been mentioned.
