Good afternoon,

I traded my 996 Turbo for a 996 GT3. I'm over the moon.

Nice!

Where did you get it from

Sometimes think I'm going to regret selling my clubsport in the not too distant future.

Cheers. Porsche Glasgow. Same place I bought my Turbo. I wish I could have kept the turbo too but I'm not Jay Leno.

I had the turbo for 12 months. I was happy with it until I drove the GT3.

The turbo was very fast on any road and any conditions. I thought it looked great with the wide body and lovely alloys.

I picked up the GT3 on Friday. It does feel like a race car. It is very shaper and does like to follow he undulations on the road. Sounds fantastic. The gear change is poor. The turbo had the short shift and the GT3 will be getting it too.

Cracking cars thumbup

If it's following undulations on the road, you might want to think about having the ride heights, corner weights and geo settings adjusted by someone who knows what they're doing (so probably NOT an OPC....)

The gear change should be buttery smooth and light (though possibly a bit baulky when cold), if it's not there's every chance the cables need adjusting. failing that the 'box/shift/cables have been abused/the clutch is worn,/the change cables are fubared. Again, get someone to check it out/adjust it who knows what they're doing.

Fully agree this. Best to get it checked out before replacing with a short shift kit. FWIW, I've tried a SSK on track and hated it, so I guess it's a very personal thing. Some people go the Cup cable route, others install the standard 997 shifter. But before you do anything, get someone experienced to take a good look. OPC may not be the right place. You're up in Glasgow but if you are near NW England at any point, get Mike Bourke at Sports and Classic to take a look. He rebuilt the 'box on mine, did a great job.

Hi guys,

I have owned a couple of Boxsters and the 996 Turbo and I don't think there is a problem with the GT3 gear change. I just think it isn't great like other Porsches (controversial). I have been spoiled in the past with a MX-5 and NSX.

I don't recall any roadest or indeed journalist describing the gearchange on any iteration of the 996 GT3 (or the 996 gearchange period) as being "poor". I've had 7 of them...... The only time they've been poor was when they'd had short shift kits fitted, the 'box, gearshift or cables had been abused, the clutch worn and heavy, or the cables incorrectly adjusted.

I think we're going to need a fuller, more detailed summation of why you think it's "poor" when compared to that of the NSX or an MX5 smile

If I could/when I can afford a second Porsche, I'd have a GT3, in an instant, but I fear I'm too attached to my 996 turbo.

Liking the comparisions you're drawing between the cars - it's what I'd expect - keep the thread updated. thumbup

I didn't know they made 7 different colours. For me it has to be a 996.2 GT3 in Speed Yellow.

What was your Favourite? What was the most disappointing or overly hyped? I would love a drive in all of these cars never owning them all. A very lucky boy.

The NSX, Mx-5 and even my manual DB9 feel like they have a mechanical and solid gear change. They feel like I am changing the cogs on the gears directly.

The Porsche's feel like I am holding a big rubber dildo ha ha ha...

only joking. The GT3 feels precise but does feel like it is pivoting on a ball attached to cables. My terminology isn't great. ha ha

I'd suggest you upgrade to either the standard 997 shift assembly (basically it removes 14 years worth of slack/wear and tightens things up without going to an all out short shift) all for the princely sum of £120, or try the Gen 2 997 GT3/RS shift assembly which has steel rather than nylon/plastic bushes which is approx £230.

Some subtle differences. GT2 experience dominated by the engine (think your previous Turbo but without the safety net of 4WD and soft suspension). I hated my first example (well perhaps hate is too strong a word, but I never really liked/gelled with it). The second Basalt black car was truly amazing. Ruf exhaust, Ohlins dampers, mapped to 540hp, a proper weapon that was fun to drive.

996 GT3 RS : I make no bones about it, I didn't gel with it and came to dislike it immensely. For me (and I stress only for ME) it was massively over-hyped. I got out of it and bought the Gloss black Manthey Mk1 which I further tweaked with the Ohlins dampers off the Basalt GT2. The Manthey modified car was THE best 996 GT3 I've driven except for a rather special and perfectly honed Mk1 with a 3.9 engine and 445hp.

The Speed yellow Mk1 GT3 was a beautiful example which I owned at the same time as the Manthey car, and therein lay the problem, the standard car just didn't feel anything like as focused or hardcore as the Manthey car.

The Zanzibar car was the the one I felt most emotionally attached to, completely standard and in very rude health, it was stunning car which I owned twice. Bought it, ran it for 12 months and sold it to make way for the Midnight blue GT2 (big mistake). When the Zanzibar car re-appeared on the market some 3 years later, I had to have it, so I bought it back !

Rest assured, a good 996 GT3 will get under your skin like few other cars, BUT they need to be in rude health and everything properly set up and adjusted. If it doesn't drive nicely, it'll be due to it (or parts of it) being tired, worn out or poorly set up/adjusted. Tyres, springs, dampers and bushes are all key to how they drive.
