So after two brilliant years in a cooking, but lovely, 997.2 C2 with PDK I've just upgraded to a well spec'd 997.1tt in manual.

I'm genuinely on the fence about the manual/pdk choice. I loved having two hands on the wheel banging through the gears, but figured I'd have some fun in a manual for a while.

I've paid the deposit and pick it up next week, I really can't wait!

So it's out with

And in with

Welcome to the cloud9 club.

I still get a thrill every time I walk out of the house and see mine parked there. I also opted for the manual and don't regret it. It just took a little while to get to grips with how quickly the damn thing goes from 1500 to 6000 rpm. No sooner have I got the left hand back on the wheel than it has to go back to the gears.

Have fun!

Congrats. I bought a 997.1 turbo tip - mega spec - three months ago. Awesome power. You def did the right thing in going for manual - much rarer & probably more fun. The tip in the gen 1 is a bit clunky -PDK is a big improvement. Probably the only regret i have is not going for a manual car.

Lovely car

I would say that though, owning a black/black manual 997.1 turbo coupe clap

Might be selling soon as only doing c.2k per year, and have serviced 4 times in last 7k miles - just not sure I can part with it

I'd read the tip wasn't so bad matched with the turbo because of the power, but when this manual came up, I had to do it.

The wait between paying a deposit and picking it up feels soooo long.

I overtook a brown cab Turbo S today with a brown roof. From the back I thought oh god I've bought an ugly car, but when I overtook it it looked better. I'm fairly sure it was just the brown (esp the brown roof). Sorry if you have a brown car.

I drove by Silverstone OPC yesterday so dropped in, the price differences are just frightening. They had a 997.1 4S, tip, same year, with front damage to bumper/wing (awaiting repair) marked up for only £2k less than this. Admittedly only 29k miles. Made me feel I'd got a bargain.

I do hope so. Can't wait to drive it again (I know I said that already)

2k/year seems a perfectly ok level for this car. Enough to keep it fresh for many a long year, but not so few that it's a total garage queen.

I did 12k in the C2 in its 2 years, but most in the first 6 months. I reckon I'll do ~3kin this, driving ~4 times a week.

The turbo is a phenomenally capable motor - huge breadth and depth of performance. What you lose in pure, unadulterated NA sound, you gain in the character and ferocity of the Mezger twin turbo engine. This is, unarguably, a race car derived power unit and it really can feel that way.

Look forward to hearing your first impressions. Congratulations!

Yes, I think it is a keeper!

So first impressions are, generally, very good. But I'm not one to exaggerate and it's not all upside.

On the plus side: it's VERY quick when driven right, it's well balanced in AWD, the manual is fun, it looks sooo much more aggressive (it gets stares from the small boys that I used to be that a Carrera doesn't) , it's still easy to drive normally (it'll be well used and I ferry my 7 year old around in it) and my wife is releaved that it doesn't look like a Lambo does.

However, I'm not going to pretend that I don't miss the rear wheel drive a bit. There is a feeling in the C2 that I struggle to explain. The best I can describe it is that you feel like you are sat right on the rear axle. The turbo feels more balanced, but loses some character in that.

The other downside is the time when you don't have boost, which with my ham fisted manual short shifting so far, is too much of the time. It feels very normal when not boosting. Still this is a challenge, to get better at driving!

Oh, and the PCM2 needs to go. Beyond the PCM though, I'm pleased the interior is so much more like the Gen2 I'm used to, and love, than I realised.

I see it has a GT2 RS gearstick. What else has the car had done to it? Must be remapped etc?

997.1 turbo needs quite bit spent on it to make it an exciting drive

I think it's just the stick. No records of anything more.

What do you think needs doing?

A very mild re-map can help driveability but, as you probably know, you can also go pretty mad with the spec/mods on turbos and the world is your lobster in terms of output.

Mine was done by Wayne at Chipwizards, but there's others with good reputations like Ken at Nine Excellence. It may be worth having the car checked anyway, because mine was sold to me as 'original' but had, in fact, been tinkered with and, according to Sports & Classic, not that sympathetically either, so boost etc. had to be dialed back and, hence also, the trip to see Wayne.

May be wrong but I'd suggest that a remap may have been on that car at some stage.

For most people a remap, sports exhaust, upgraded clutch and TPC DSC module with GT2 rear sway bar more than sufficient to wake a 997.1 turbo up.

You should maybe give 9e or ESM a call.

I've read good things about 9e's GT2 RS hybrid VTGS but they're pretty expensive - these very special VTGS give the 997.1 turbo 640 PS and 0-300kph in 25 secs.

Stock car is 0-300kph in 40 + secs

from my conversations with Ken at 9E the main thing that hols the car back is the restrictive exhaust, so an aftermarket exhaust and remap is more than enough for most. I uprated the clutch to a 890 Sachs when the original started to slip.

It has a relatively new clutch so my wallet's hoping that won't be an option for a while!

Any recommendations on a good aftermarket exhaust for these (performance over sound)?

As for the smaller jobs, back to that gear knob. The alcantera was filthy, I figured I'd have to buy new but it came up lovely with some dilute AG leather cleaner and a towel and some gentle cleaning...

On the exhaust it depends on budget and whether you want cats or not.

Generally in terms of starting cost they are around the prices below give or take a few quid bit you get the picture. They all sound better than stock with Europipe the most bass and Speedtech / Kline more of a howl but a turbo will sadly never sound like a GT3 or even as good as your C2 wink

Capristo very nice sound as is the 9e exhaust. ESM catless the best in terms of least back pressure as no cats. Going through this process myself.

Akaprovic £6000
Capristo £4000 but much less catless
Cargraphic £3500
Europipe £3000
9e switchable £3000
ESM catless £2500
Speedtech £2500
Kline £2500
