Monitors like this one - are they actually 12v with a stepped down 240v transformer supply?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-S22F350-22-Inch-H...

I'm looking to put one in a motorhome and connect it to something like this to be able to play DVDs.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pioneer-DVH-340UB-DVD-Pla...

Would it work?

They vary.

The Samsung one you linked to is 14V according to the user manual. It may work at 12V but possibly not.

Suggest you look at the user manual for one you might want ans check it takes a 12V DC input.

Ah, that's helpful, thank you. Hadn't thought of checking user manuals, I guess most are on line somewhere.

Tried a few user manuals but couldn't find anything about voltage in them...

I've been looking at Samsung - can be monitor or TV, I want it to connect to a DVD player. Something like this would be perfect but it needs to be 12v so that I can run it from a 12v 'cigarette lighter' type socket.

Or use something like this: http://www.screwfix.com/p/ring-power-source-invert...

Check the power output is adequate. There are larger capacity ones.

Samsung seem to be 14V DC or mains input.

There's a brand called 'Cello' who do some 12V DC models.

I think you might have to consider running an inverter so you can plug any mains TV in.

That'll flatten the battery very quickly - they're horrendously inefficient.

How about this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12-Volt-Freeview-Super-S...

Indeed regarding the inverter. Plus there seems to be something innately wrong about spending money to turn 12v into 240v if it is immediately turned back into 12v again by a transformer.

The link you provided may yet prove to be the answer, I'd just prefer to have a decent make that would hopefully work better and last longer. Not been very convinced by 'no name' AV stuff.

Vehicles output more than 12v. I put a meter on mine and it was 13.8v.

Agree about inverters being inefficient, but if you have a very limited choice of 12V monitors, you may have to look at another way.

Most of the Samsungs appear to use 14V. It's unlikely even a fully charged battery putting out 13.5-13.8V will power it, but there are DC-DC converters around which would allow you to step up from a lower DC voltage to 14V.

They work a lot more efficiently than mains inverters.

This has an adjustable output so you can get 14V out and it will take 10-32V in.

It looks like I'm probably going to be best off taking a chance with a 'no name' on the basis I can just bang the lead into the fag lighter socket and switch it on.

Something like this:

I feel I must be missing something fundamental here - any thoughts?

Why is this TV £300

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cello-Digital-Freeview-Pe...

And this TV, which appears to be identical £170?

We have a Furrion tv in the motorhome. It was about £100 on Ebuyer a couple of years ago, and is more than adequate. The sound isn't the best, but for a cheap, rarely used tv/dvd combo, it's fine. Came with a 12v cig lighter lead, and freeview, although we mostly use tye satellite.

Happily it will fit right next to the stereo which is a normal car type with an 'aux' input so I figure I should be able to get a lead that goes from headphones output to the stereo aux input
