Was set on getting an A3 1.6L 2009(59 Reg) Petrol engine, but after reading a few comments its put me off and Im looking to hold off until I find a 1.4Turbo or the 2.0 Diesel.

Is the 1.6L really as bad as people say to the point where I shouldn't really consider it a viable option?

Probably the worst engine option available, had one as a courtesy car in 2012, it was adequate but dull.

Yeah, from seeing the prices, it's the cheapest and weakest engine.

How was it on terms of mpg if you remember, please, and is the engine as weak as people say?

Don't remember the MPG to be honest. It was pretty much a brand new car I drove so have no idea about longevity of the engine.

Neither particularly powerful nor economical. It was very much the 'cheap' A3 of its day.

1.4T is a much, much nicer thing.

Even if it's a little more expensive to buy I would hold out for this engine rather than settle on the old N/A 1.6.

Even the 1.4T isn't great TBH. If you're going for petrol, go for the 1.8 or 2.0. They cope with the weight of the car much better.

I disagree; the 1.4T has plenty of performance for a normal car.

1.4T is a decent engine, had one in a Golf estate recently and it was perfectly acceptable.

The 1.6 will be an FSI, so will need higher octane fuel too. They're not bad, but there are better.

I currently own a 1.4T and think it could do with a bit more power but maybe that's just me. Compared to the N/A 1.6 though, it is much better. RE the higher octane fuel, doesn't that also apply to the 1.4T, as it is a TFSI engine?

In the same way a ham sandwich is an adequate lunch. Yawn.

OP, just get a diesel if mpg is your primary concern. End.

Owned one for 2 years. Slow and uneconomical. Reliable though.
