I've spent more time in my 5 series now and overall I'm having a positive experience, few minor issues that are starting to do my head in.

Firstly when the car is cold I am getting juddering when pulling away, it's intermittent and has caught me out a few times pulling out into a busy road, almost causing me to stall. Online research suggests it may be a common problem, some say it's fluid on the flywheel, some say the flywheel itself, some say it's a design flaw with the cold fluid not getting through into the clutch system.

It's a minor thing but it's not what u expect on a 6 year old low mileage 40 grand car.

Other issues are just irritating interior rattles, some are defo coming from the seats but the ones bugging me are from the dash board.

What can I do to stop or reduce these, please don't say turn the music up?

And before anyone says, why didn't u hear them on a test drive. My answer to that is there's a big difference between a test drive and about 750 miles worth of driving.

I'm afraid the juddering clutch is pretty much universal on manual BMWs these days. I had a manual F10 520d some years ago. At 25k miles the judder was quite significant on the first couple of uses of the clutch when cold. I nagged the dealer about it, and to their credit, they replaced the clutch. They told me that the old one which they took out looked fine, but they blamed it on the lack of asbestos in modern clutches. For a few thousand miles it was better, but the judder did return, albeit slightly less. I just learnt to live with it, and sold the car at 50k miles.

They all have a few rattles. I had my seat bases replaced, which improved it a fair bit. I wedged a few pieces of black felt into a few of the dashboard gaps which dealt with some of the rattles, but it wasn't perfect. I have driven quite a few F10s and they all rattle a bit, as do most BMWs, but it was so much better than my X5 which it replaced.

Oh well.

I will see what I can do with the rattles. The bit of juddering isn't an issue. Just not something you expect from BMW.

Still a great car all round.

BMW can't do manual gearboxes, they are always pretty cack.

They can do rattles pretty well though.

The only rattles in my 2012 530i are:

Cupholders buzz at certain frequency sometimes.

Passenger seat belt buckle knocks on the crappy hard plastic of the b pillar. Just need to turn buckle round.

Exhaust manifold or bracket squeaks going over bumps. Trying to get dealer to sort it.

Nothing from inside dash at all. I can easily hear junk rolling round in glove box though so worth checking in there.

I have the passenger belt over the what would be left hand side of he seat side support. Not made a noise ever in that setup.

No rattles in my 2015 520d, other than the "big one" coming from under the bonnet, easily fixed by putting the window back up.

F10 interior well made so surprised you are seeing rattles at 40k miles.

As others have said, BMW manuals are not the best, but they sell so few manual 5 series no incentive to sort it out.

Stick shifter on the 5 series is really a no no.

I get the passenger seat belt noise. That is easily fixed tho. There's defo creaks from the dash area as well.

It is a very well made interior, I bought the car for size and a bit of comfort. I do wish it was auto tho lol.

I could sell it, probably at a 1000 pound loss and find another with auto. But at my price point I think I will be looking at higher mileage or non m sport spec.

The seat belt only rattles when it's left in the wrong position, slightly twisted.

No rattles at all in my '14 F10.

BMW don't do gearboxes. Getrag do. As they do for lots of other brands.

Can't picture what you mean by this. Just had a look and there is no support. Only rattles when the buckle is facing wrong way anyway so no big deal.

Honestly I find the worst rattles are the ones coming from cack rolling round in the door pockets and glove box. The door of the glove box seems thinner material than my e46 so probably less sound proofed.

If it has clutch judder it will normally be fixed by a new clutch and flywheel. Re dash rattles, I'm guessing it's a 2.0l diesel. Afraid this is the common cause of the rattles.

My F10 525d is very quiet and well behaved, no judders or rattles or knocks, I think the F10's a great car. Touch wood!

I think we all have very different standards when it comes to rattles. I must have driven over 100 BMWs over the last 20 years - pretty much every model from a 116i to a 760Li, including all of the M cars, the i3 and i8. Every single car I have driven has rattled to some extent on rougher surfaces. I guess it's pretty much impossible to make them entirely rattle-free, or at least I have yet to find one.

The F10/F11 of which I have owned one and driven perhaps 8, is somewhere in the middle for rattles in my experience. The worst car was an E53 X5, hammered together by rednecks.

Those who think their cars are rattle-free are just not listening carefully, but that's probably a good thing

My dash defo creaks on bad surfaces and even a little when turning. Very very irritating.

As I've said already tho, great car. Would be better with a petrol engine but you can't have everything can you?

I think the state of the roads lately tries any car to its limits by being bounced around by so many holes etc. If the roads where repaired think most cars would be a lot smoother drive and less rattles.
Saying that though I have an f10 61 plate and only rattle is the seatbelt one and as said before, just needs moving.

Something I've just thought of which mine does and is super annoying but it's not really a rattle as such. The engine cooling fan when running at full chat can be felt it the steering wheel as a slight vibration.

Never had that on my e46.

Anyone else get that ? I am petrol 6 pot f10 and these do run pretty hot iirc.

Also my front right (OSF) suspension knocks and feels loose going over cobbled road but am getting front wishbones replaced to solve that.

Definitely no creaks from dash area. I am very sensitive to cracks knocks and rattles too.
