20.
Want a fast car. Why?
Insurance will likely restrict your choice due to limited experience behind the wheel.
Isn't your present car fast enough for you?

I think you might be on the wrong forum. hehe Why wouldn't you want a fast car, if you could afford it?

Fun isn't all about speed. IMO there is more fun in carrying a little speed in corners then going fast in a straight line. Buy yourself a Mazda MX-5. Don't bother with a S2000 yet as it might hurt you more.

Seeing as you're 20yrs old you shouldn't have a problem being rejected from other PHers trying to sell their MX-5 privately.

E55 amg?
TVR Tuscan?
Porsche Boxster?

£10k would get you any of those.

Get some books, videos and a few coaching sessions and get yourself the IAM or RoSPA advanced driving test passed.

It's felt quite good to me making progress along a swoopy single carriageway A-road in a humdrum family saloon before.

Rob Wilson the driver coach a few good F1 drivers uses an Astra.

exactly. OP should do his own searching. it's not hard if you know a little about cars/models.

at the end of the day you're still 20. you probably wont get anything that much quick for under £2k insurance. insurance is money you're never getting back. I would much rather save £1000 on insurance and buy a fiesta zetec S/st line then on a ST. that's £1000 that can be spent on a holiday, gigs, or other things.

A Tuscan for £10k? Please let me know where so I can go and buy one. Or do you mean Chimaera?

I keep reading these threads on here - where the hell does a 20 year old get ten grand for a car? Ten grand from parents for a house deposit that gets spent on a car, maybe

beliieve it or not we're not all made the same
some people actually prefer the way a car accelerates to the way it goes round corners.

to the Op
golf gti or similar will feel much faster than your Astra ( not too sure about Insurance for a 20 year old) but running costs shouldn't be too high, meaning you can keep saving for your dream car in the future

Bank of Mummy and Daddy. Ten grand for a 20 year old to spend on a car is actually quite a modest budget compared to some of the spoilt little rich kids out there!

I don't think it's bitterness. It's more likely that it could be. Most youth these days go to college/6th form and then uni. they don't come out of full time education until after 21. Where are you going to find the time to work and save up £10k? The most I ever had in my account was £2k around then and that was because it was from a student loan.

Having said that it's his money, he can do what he wants with it of course.

£10k might buy a fast car but you might be wise to think about running costs? There's a reason some fast cars are cheap and were you unlucky and finding yourself with a big repair bill, you're £10k fast car could well become a £10k paper weight. (I don't suppose many 20 year olds use paper, let alone in quantities that might warrant a weight to keep them in one place?)

Maybe go for something where handling takes precedence over outright speed? An MX5 is a good shout, or something similar, where there's plenty of affordable spares back-up and even a few tweaks to make you feel like you're going a little quicker.

Quite.......

...after 3 years at university & aged 22, I bought a brand new Golf GTi cash. No bank of mum & dad involved. It's perfectly doable & why begrudge somebody for doing it.

As above

At 20 I was in full time employment on 34k a year and that was in the mid nineties and I bought a 205 GTi cash at £11k,

Why does everyone assume its always funded by mum and dad, some seriously sour and bitter people on here sometimes.

OK baited

At 19 I purchased a hot hatch for £10K. Was on £120 per week. Saved half the deposit and went into the bank for a loan.

Can be done if living at home and not smoking, gambling or drinking it away.

Back in '92 I bought an RX7 in finance (px'ing my older RX) for £6.5k and paid £1200 insurance as a 22 year old. No bank of mum and dad either. Simply worked hard and spent my cash on something I wanted. Just as others are doing here it seems to me.
