Hi,
I am planning to buy a car and I am bit confused with choosing between BMW X1 and Audi A3 S line.
BMW X1 xline xdrive - 7500 miles run , £15k, 2014(14 reg)
Audi A3 sline - 25000 miles run, £16k(2015, 15reg)

My use is for social and commuting purpose and i will use <10k miles/year.

BMW x1 i choose because when i have kids this bigger car is well suited .. but only 50mpg

Audi a3 sline i choose as the interiors are excellent and sline model and 2015. but 75mgp

please help me to choose between these two cars.

You'll never get 75mpg from the A3...

75 recommended by the manufacturer so i will get at least 60mpg

but for x1 the manufacturer recommended is 55mpg. so i hope i will get only 45mpg.

Unless you sit at cruising speed for 90% of your journey expect mid 50s at best from the a3.

Both are completely different cars and are not comparible.

BMW is a mini 4x4 with a boot barely bigger than a golf. It is based on the old 1 series (the current is nearly due for replacement to give you an idea on how old the platform is) so has dated engines, interior etc

Audi is a car of form over function. In s line trim they are smart inside and out, but they aren't very big inside and the boot is quite small. They drive nice, have the latest engines etc but the 1.6 is nasty (I assume you are looking at a 1.6 as the 2.0 has no hope of doing 75mpg) and generally the equivalent golf has much better kit levels and better practicality.

Thanks all for the reply
X1 is 18d xline xdrive
Audi a3 is 1.6 tdi salon . I am worries as why all are against the mpg of a3.
I hope now a days the automotive industry focuses on mpg of vehicle as well.
When the manufacture recommend 75mpg why can't I get at least 60m0g which is again higher than x1.

Yes x1 and a3 are two different cars. But these two are on good deal. So looking which one I can go for.
Also in terms of reliability of the brand I would like to know which one is better.
I know as long as I keep the car in good condition with proper service it's going to be a better car. But on the other hand I would like to know about cost of parts... mot issues... performance. If any one of you have any one of these cars ? Any personal experience?
A couple of car reviews mentioned that x1 steering wheel is bit harder. That's the type of review I am looking for.

I have an A3 saloon with the 2.0tdi 183PS quattro

Had it from new in November last year and with the engine tight wasn't getting anywhere near claimed MPG. Now with nearly18k on it, I can get an indicated (on the display) 59mpg taking it easy.

It's heavier and has the 4wd. 60 mpg on a 1.6tdi with 2wd should be easily attained?

If you're looking at an X1 wouldn't the most appropriate comparison be the Q3 rather than the A3?

Because he's getting a "deal"

And VED is £30 at most

(Yes, I know neither are really plus points for buying diesel at 10k per annum)

OP - if your commute isn't 30-40 miles each way of pure motorway driving at a steady 60mph cruise, then you're as well ignoring what the stated manufacturer MPG figures are. It's just not going to happen.

You will be OK with both cars. You will get some talk on here about Nxx engine with xyz issue and blah blah but generally servicing, reliability, MOT's etc will be fine.

I had a X1 118d the other weekend as hire car. I achieve around 45mpg. The A3 55mpg ish. If you daily commute is motorway etc then you may get slightly higher.

The X1 is a jacked and worse version of the 1 series so its heavier and less fuel efficient than a normal 1 series or A3. 4WD is mainly need for grip with high powered cars (these are not! ) or if you pull trailers through fields, snow etc.

The latter maybe an issue in Newcastle ?!?

However I would not get either but rather a Skoda Octavia as its much the better car.

Thanks for your reply.

Currently i have Sloda fabia petrol and again I dont wish to move on to skoda even though it's a good reliable car.

I feel for the price of X1 with 7500 miles is better as I couldn't able to see something similar to that price.

I'd a 2012 Golf 1.6 TDI and got 65mpg on average (recorded brim to brim), but that was being extremely focused on economy and very long steady runs.

I've a 2016 Passat 1.6 TDI now and i'm getting 55mpg (recorded brim to brim).

I would have thought 60mpg was doable on a 1.6 TDI A3.

I think that the X1 is more of a jacked up old style 3 series touring NOT a 1 series as someone here has said.
