The 'issue' (if thats what we want to call it) is that for most die-hard Porsche fans,(me included) Porsche is a company that makes sports cars first and foremost. I was a fan for many years before I owned one and during 90% of that time, they only made 2 door sports cars.

The die-hards now grudgingly accept the fact that Porsche needs to sell Cayennes and Macans in order to remain profitable. Hey, if thats what they need to do in order to make more lovely sports cars then all power to them.

The 'issue' is that the true sports cars are now only available to those who spend a shed-load of money on the other more profitable cars that Porsche make.

Its almost like Porsche are saying to all those true sports car fans 'Thanks for buying our cars for years and years but we dont need you now, these people over here give us all we need'
I get that, but you don't have to buy a GT3. Even the humble bog standard 911 Carrera is a massively quick sports car.

Quick, yes but the GT cars are more involving, more.....Porsche. If you know what I mean.

In the past a standard 964 Carrera 2 was/still is a very fast, involving, engaging sports car. The 964 RS or Turbo S was the same but turned up to 11. Get out your chequebook and take your pick.

The modern standard 991 Carrera 2 is a million miles away from a 911R. Get out your chequebook, buy 5 cayennes and then you might be able to buy a 911R.

I know this is an entirely subjective viewpoint but for me the standard 991 911 Carrera is just another fast car and nowhere near as engaging as the equivalent 964 Carrera 2 of its time so therefore does not even warrant consideration.

Its the GT specials that appeal because the standard ones have become so unapealing.

I don't think that's a fair or correct statement.

Its a sweeping statement for sure but its how I feel personally. Other people will disagree and thats fine that we all like different things.

If I could afford to I would buy a Macan Turbo to run as a daily as I think they are great cars. Or I would run a 991 Carrera S as a daily as its a damm sight better to drive than most but if I was to save up my money to buy the sports car of my dreams, the one I want to own and cherish and build a bond with then it would be a GT special car (with a manual gearbox mind you) biggrin

I would also categorise the GTS lineage as a GT special. Great cars!

As a side note, why did you buy the GTS over a standard S?

Because the Standard S did nothing for you I suspect.

With regards to the line that is often trotted out that production capacity is what limits the numbers, why are GTS cars and Turbos or even standard Carera and S models not affected by these production issues?

I can order a GTS no issue's whenever i like. GT3....?. mmmmm no sorry sir factory is fully booked.

Shame really, GT3 touring would get me buying a new car even if i needed a load of finance.

Because GT cars are built in a different factory to the standard cars. GTS is classed as a standard car.

I agree 100%, that's a huge part of the GT desirability, excluding speculators.
It's the watering down of the "vanilla" cars is the problem. I own a gt4, I test drove a 991.2 gts, the extra seats would have let me use it more. Unfortunately it was just another very nice fast car- too expensive for me as a daily and not interactive enough for a blast.
I came to the conclusion I'd be better spending the difference on a Golf r, if I really wanted a fast more practical car.

No they are not, all built at Zuffenhassen stutgart, i've been on the factory tour and seen them all go through.

Correct. Last production car to be built in Weissach was the 996.1GT3, some 17 or 18 years ago.

So if Porsche really wanted to they could put a load of GT3s (or anything more exotic) down the production line at the expense of 'cooking' 911s.

Think you need to go for more trackdays at the larger tracks. The 991RS are all over the place at Spa/nurburgring and plenty everytime I've been to Silverstone in the last few years.

I do , I think it's spot on - I clearly remember driving my first GT3 and thinking - st - this is amazing and then thinking , if they can make this, why aren't all 911's made like this - I just don't get it - if I was in charge they'd be all we'd sell (not really - but you get the gist) smile

Regarding the often low mileage comments, it's good to remember these cars are toys. Look at the mileage on most GT4's now for sale. They're getting used steadily.

Most people who can afford a gt3 or 4 are hard working, probably family girls and guys. It's not a daily either so the cars will get used sparingly in a lot of cases due to that very fact. Yes there are flippers blah blah blah but I do think some get too stressed out about the seeing cars for sale with 2k miles on the clock. I doubt I'll do 3.5k miles in mine in the first year due to having other cars, a young family and a business to run... oh and if I'm lucky, a couple of weeks in the sun.

Agree l have not done many in last decade or so . but as I said "most" not all ( think there are a few thousand 991 RS's ) ........ my 64 RS had radio delete .... now stitching is a big debate , times change ...sadly the only Porsches I have now were all made at Weissach.

I have never bought a Porsche from a main dealer. My oldest Porsche is a 1965. My newest is a 2006. I do hope I get a 991 GT2RS. The other half will be very disappointed if I don't as it is automatic.

There are very few main dealers that actually know what their talking about which is why I've mainly gone to specialist .
