A twin-test we haven't seen online yet, nor do I expect we will do (VW might be worried about the outcome). Interested to hear PH's thoughts however..

Looking at the two cars there would appear to be little discernible difference as to why you would currently choose the Golf over the Polo, especially given the c. £8k price difference at list £22.6k vs £30.5k. They both do 0-62 in the 6's and top out in the region of 150mph.

Before it's mentioned, I note that the discounts are far higher on the Golf (DTD doing Polo @ £19.4k, Golf @ £25.3k) but given the 5 year newer design, much-improved cabin size and aforementioned price difference, would anyone else find it hard to justify the premium?

In the Golf's favour, it is still the bigger car, does have the brand 'kudos' and IMO a far better conceived design. Can't help but feel the smart money would be in a PP Golf now. Who knows, maybe that's where VW are looking to push its customers....

Haven’t the reviews of the new Polo GTI been a bit lukewarm? Personally I’d choose nearly new Golf GTI over new Polo GTI.

The polo is a small car, if your a midget then great.

Being 6ft4 i found the golf gti more than adequate in terms of space.

Looks like the Polo still has a torsion bear rear axle rather than the Golf's multilink independent setup. And it misses out on the differential you can have in the PP Golf.

Also the 'sports suspension' system of the previous Polo GTI's isn't adaptive like the Golf platforms DCC suspension either. I've googled to see what the new one with 'Sports Select' actually gives you but it's hard to find more info.

I bought a used Golf GTI PP and I don't regret it, seems more grown up than the Polo GTI. A twin test could be interesting though. Perhaps VW Driver will do one at some point. I have to admit I've never been a Polo fan to be honest, in my mind I think they are for old people. Much rather have an up! GTI when it eventually comes out.

Would 100% agree on the image point and looking at the previous Polo GTIs, VW did almost seem consigned to the fact that the GTI was something the merely "should" have in the range rather than a product to really take the fight to hot hatch rivals.

The new one doesn't seem to deviate from the usual 'extremely competent if not the last word in excitement' ethos, however with the GTI being included almost from launch, it does at least seem that VW have made this a genuine contender for the forthcoming Fiesta ST.

My golf gti went in for a service and they gave me a polo!

My knees were up the dash with having 2 kids in it! When the kids weren’t in and I put the seat in a comfortable position there was no room for kids anyway and I’m only 5ft 9 seemed to be more space in my old ibiza fr tbh

Isn't the new Polo meant to be more or less the same size as the Mk5 Golf?

New polo is as big as the mk5 golf. In fact on paper it looks very similar to the MK5 golf gti as that too had 197hp.

Polo could well be a bargain.

I once had a passenger who was 6' 4" and about 19 stone in my MK1 Golf Gti with no detrimental effects - although the car was probably about the size of a Lupo! laugh

Bigger isn't always better.

A bit off topic, i know, but do we know when the new Polo GTI is due to be released for order? I'm now seeing on reviews that first delivery's should be around May time. Some sites are unclear as to state whether you will receive the car from May or if the car is available to order from May though.

Spoke to my local dealer yesterday and they said ordered books opened yesterday and they'd hopefully have a demo in the next few weeks. VW Facebook claiming they won't have demo cars til May though. :-/
